They just go and sweep any long-overdue and very basic transport requirement project and stick the word Olympic on itâŚmind you, the media are giving the former-state-govt a free-pass! Apparently the CRR is an Olympic legacy projectâŚwtâŚQQQQuuueeeennnnsssssssssllllaaannnnndddddâŚ
North Boondall is a pretty major park-and-ride station in comparison to all other stations on the Shorncliffe line. Most of the patronage on North Boondall comes from passengers who live in Taigum and Bracken Ridge who drive to the station (mostly due to lack of alternatives to get to the Shorncliffe line). Even if there are proper bus connections to train stations (e.g. improved 326 linking Bracken Ridge to Carseldine and Sandgate stations, 330 linking Bracken Ridge and Taigum to Zillmere station), there will still be the option to drive to North Boondall station from those suburbs, and North Boondall is decently connected with the Gateway Bikeway to northern Boondall and Taigum, allowing decent active transport links to the station. So I feel like North Boondall station isnât going anywhere anytime soon.
Also while duplicating the final leg of the Shorncliffe line would be perfect, there are other places on the rail network that need duplication more urgently than the Shorncliffe (like Cleveland line Manly-Cleveland, Beenleigh line Kuraby-Beenleigh LGCFR). The Shorncliffe line can probably run every 10min peak-hour as well with upgraded signalling without duplication compared to the Beenleigh and Cleveland lines.
I said feels a bit wasted until BEC finally gets replaced and more in-fill comes (Iâm not a fan of large amounts of public funding carparking sitting idle all day). I didnât advocate itâs removal, so please donât verbal me on that. Sandgate station far exceeds North Boondall patronage in morning and afternoon peaks as a park and ride and connected bus connection, so itâs a bit of a stretch to call it a major park-and-ride. Itâs built for it, but the patronage doesnât show it.
I didnât say any other line was more or less worthy. I was just pointing out that itâs an extremely low cost and easy duplication to do on a line that has a lot of development in-fill on itâs route (e.g. Banyo, Nundah, Toombul).
IMO there shouldnât be any single line tracks left in the South East, Doomben being the odd exception given other problems.
Personally, I disagree. The concept behind the Coomera Connector I feel is a sound one - there is no full local road alternative between Beenleigh and Nerang. You donât have a complete highway access road, or parallel corridors like Logan Road, Ipswich Road or Rochedale Road - if you need to get from inland north Gold Coast to inland south Gold Coast by road, you pretty well have to use the M1 (noting that using PT is not the answer for everyone).
My biggest issue with the CC was that it did not have to be built to full highway standard. That whole âSecond M1â terminology was a mistake. It could have been something more equivalent to Logan Road or Bermuda Street and still served the purpose.
The annoying thing is, if they donât connect it back up to the M1 properly at the northern end of the alignment, they will have spent all this money for a road that doesnât completely fulfil its purpose.
I know that, if the CC was completed all the way up past Eagleby to connect up to the Logan Motorway and Beenleigh-Redland Bay Road, it would likely keep me off the M1 for my occasional weekend jaunts down to the little holiday let my in-laws own in Southport.
However, with it terminating in Coomera, thatâs stopping significantly short - it then becomes fairly useless to people from Redlands, or people like myself from Logan, etc. If I have to take the M1 as far as Coomera to access it, Iâm not going to battle Coomera traffic to get to it, Iâm just going to stay on the M1 until Smith Street.
I realise many of us probably arenât happy about GCLR4 being scrapped, but at least another section is being built. This is a good thing, because it means we keep a lot of the skilled labour projects like this employ. Iâm of the opinion that GCLR should be a continuous project until itâs completed, whatever that looks like. We should always have at least one stage, and sometimes two, under construction.
Interestingly, BT and ABC only managed to get the one render, but the Courier Mail got three of them, including the important one showing the retention of the heritage listed Centenary Pool.
IMO, BTQ really need to advocate for an Olympic Park station to help take the pressure off Exhibition, while also serving the School and local residents.
