Would a non-CBD route be popular enough with the public to warrant the cost of it though?
Iāve mentioned before in threads about the Tennyson line that post CRR, you can have a service that terminates at Yeerongpilly from the WEST, with zero conflicting moves, by building a new fourth western platform at Yeerongpilly.
You could then just extend the Doomben line services that are supposed to terminate at Indooroopilly, to terminate at Yeerongpilly instead
I think I mentioned that a while ago in the LGCFR thread somewhere but someone said that it would take up valuable spots for the Gold Coast expresses in that section
I wish it happened though
I have to say that I completely disagree, one of the main problems with public transport in Queensland that I think the vast majority of people on the forum would agree with is the lack of planning integration between different modes like buses and trains, wasting a golden opportunity to reform QR to deliver urban train services in an integrated way with buses and active transport that would come from doing crr2 as part of the already existing city train mode would genuinely in mmyy opinion be the worst public transport decision made since the Brisbane tram network was shut down. To me, adding a new āmetroā mode to a mess of public transport in seq will just make this problem even worse. The most important thing to do to actually make PT actuallu viable to more people in SEQ is to reconfigure transport planning and operations, especially trains and buses.
When has the concept of transferring in the CBD been āpopularā?
This is outdated social construct and planning thinking that forces you to take the longer, wasteful, and inefficient way.
The CRR2 would be used by more people than the Doomben line.
The major, motivating reason to build track pair #4 through the city is because of increasing peak hour commuter demand from the westside. And yes, thatās mostly to the CBD.
Heads up: some time tomorrow Iām going to shift all the CRR2 discussion over to the CRR2 thread. (I acknowledge Iām a major cause of thread derailment!)
Edit: done
ā¦we have a CRR: The Sequel thread?
Ever heard of MREX?
Ever heard of MREX?
I have. ![]()
With respect, itās the wrong proposal for Flagstone/Beaudesert. That corridor is classic longer-distance suburban rail, it needs decent baseline frequency off peak plus somewhat higher frequency in peak, but it doesnāt need its own CBD corridor. Itās also already a heavy rail corridor.
Plus, we have sufficient CBD capacity on the QR network from the Southside for a long, long time to come.
First, Gold Coast + Beenleigh combined will only use about 2/3rds of the trains/hour. Then thereās the option to run 9-car trains through CRR to trade off between running more trains/hour and more train per train. Then thereās the option to quadruplicate from Boggo Rd south and put either the Beenleigh or Beaudesert lines over the Merivale Bridge (if we break sectorisation we can even do it with the current 3 tracks, I guess).
So where is the right corridor for automated metro? Wellā¦
If we eventually quad the Boggo Road-Kuraby corridor, I believe we should have the Beenleigh line run via the Merrivale Bridge and the Beaudesert and GC lines run via CRR. My reasoning has to do with future 9-car trains.
If the Beenleigh line were to use 9-car trains, then every station on that line would need to have their platforms extended to accommodate.
If the Beaudesert line were to use 9-car trains, that wouldnāt be a big problem because all of its stations would be built from scratch, meaning you could design them with 9-car trains in mind (or with provision for future platform extensions).
Of course, this assumes that the platforms at Altandi, Loganlea, and Beenleigh are extended for the GC line to use 9-car trains. If you were to do that, then you could have every train through CRR be nine cars long.
Tl;dr: Itās easier to use 9-car trains on the Beaudesert line than the Beenleigh line.
I would argue that the Beaudesert Line simply doesnāt need 9 car trains, and likely wouldnāt need them any time in the forseeable future.
Hot takeā¦
Ferny grove to Ipswich via Breakfast Creek, Bulimba, Teneriffe, rejoin at Central
Thatll leave Cleveland pair with Shorncliffe, Airport and Doomben but itll need Beaudesert to be added in which i think need a different alignment to get to Salisbury after South Brisbane via West End, UQ St Lucia, Annerley and Tarrangdi (Toohey forest)
Post CRR, Cleveland will only be paired with Ferny Grove. Doomben, Airport, and Shorncliffe will be paired with Ipswich and Kippa-Ring.
What would the Sunshine Coast (Caloundra) line be paired with⦠Cleveland?
Sunshine Coast line will be paired with Gold Coast, so trains from Varsity Lakes will go to either Birtinya or Nambour depending on the run
Personally I think itās more than likely that they will all run to Caloundra with a shuttle being used between Beerwah and Nambour (with some through running city terminating/originating trains in peak).
Iād say even peak runs are probably unlikely, excluding the Peak direct daily 'Gympielanderā, which may be only trains running via Bowen Hills, but could be via the Exhibition loop and treated similarly like a āTraveltrainā service rather than a Citytrain one.
Something more of a hourly Beerwah-Nambour shuttles during off-peak and half-hourly in the peak direction between 5am and 8am morning peak and between 3pm and 6pm afternoon peak to also cover for School Traffic in the region as well.
Iād expect the current Caboolture terminators and Nambour terminators will be all redirected to Birtinya, reducing Caboolture to a peak-only terminus with the Elimbah serving as the primary yard, enabling the Eastern part of the Caboolture yard to either be converted to more Park and Rides or ideally sold for Transit Orientated Development (TOD).
A second CRR yes, should include a line in from south, through the city and out on a NEW Northern Corridor, the existing Northern Corridor is not going to cope, particularly, if we ever get serious about servicing areas NORTH of the city - not to mention Traveltrain and freight congestion.
Looking at the freight linesā¦
Doomben, Ipswich, Acacia, Port of Brisbane
So the 2nd CRR to relieve pressure on northside lines for freight and one of the sectors would have to seperate Ferny Grove by creating seperate path off Wilston station to rejoin Fortitude valley via underground Albion, new Ascot, Doomben, Hamilton, Bulimba, Tenerife⦠And close the existing Clayfield, Hendra stations.
