Yeh I expect the bi-directional path will be the option progressing due to the route being more simple and less crossing conflict. Also I think BCC really wants to retain some street parking for the local cafes here.
These ads have been incessant on my podcasts lol. I donāt get the increased RBTs for PMDs when the highest risk is still vehicles and itās been in the media this year that QPS canāt keep up with the enforcement posture they need. This is particularly telling with the amount of vehicle incidents involving pedestrians and cyclists this year have been drug or drunk driving of the motor vehicle. The most notable being the boy killed on his e-bike at Robina was hit by a drink driver and the drug driver on the Sunshine Coast who hit and killed a child.
Iām not condoning drinking on a PMD like you would see in Howard Smith Wharves and the Valley, I canāt contemplate how you can safely operate one, but the hire scooters are more likely to just kill the user rather than pedestrians like a heavy vehicle would. The penalty as a risk / proportion calculation to users just seems widely vibes based than any meaningful evidence. Thereās definitely some research that PMD usage is popular when drinking because of lack of PT options and surge pricing by ride-share.

A Missing Brisbane Bikeway Link Is Finally Coming
Brisbane City Council has unveiled plans for a new 1.2km separated bikeway along Shafston Avenue between Kangaroo Point and Mowbray Park.
The project would create dedicated space for cyclists and scooter riders, replacing a section where riders currently share a narrow footpath with pedestrians.
Once complete, the bikeway will connect into the wider CityLink Cycleway, linking Brisbaneās eastern suburbs to the CBD via the Kangaroo Point Bridge and Story Bridge underpass.
Council says tens of thousands of people travel along Shafston Avenue each year, despite there currently being no dedicated space for bikes or scooters.
The final design is expected later this year, with construction currently scheduled to begin in 2027. ![]()
