Brisbane's New Bus Network Phase 1

Express routes ar not strictly about time savings, sometimes they are about load management, e.g. P569 not servicing Springwood helps to ensure that there’s space for Springwood passengers on 555s.

All trunk route (aka main roads) should be express in that the stations are spaced out and people walk/ride to them. Then there can be local services (aka not on trunk routes) that suit people that need a service like that to get to the trunk routes or local/ district shops. This would rationalize the route numbers dramatically!

There’s some small updates to timetables outside of the Southside which are welcome.

My local bus route, the 320, has a small change to remove a 30 minute gap between services just before the morning peak ends which has caught me out in the past!

TransLink service updates are up. Unfortunately still pretty average communication with a few things that seem wrong and replacements not clearly communicated.

I’ll post more examples later but for now:

For heaven’s sake - where are the maps?

There are quite a lot of substantial changes to bus stops for Logan and Redlands services as a result of this as well, and of course none of this was covered in BCC’s BNBN Document because they aren’t TfB.

Redlands services changes are relatively minor:

Routes 243, 251, 265, 273, 275 & 279 will now use Creek Street Stop 149 near Adelaide St instead of Ann Street Stop 7 at Anzac Square.

Routes 261, 267, 281 & 299 will now use Creek Street Stop 149 near Adelaide St instead of Ann Street Stop 7 at Anzac Square and will now use Ann Street Stop 10A at King George Square instead of Ann Street Stop 10 at King George Square.

Logan changes are a bit more complex. Starting from the top, 545 gets moved off Logan Road, deviating up Underwood Road to join the busway at Rochedale and now continues to Griffith Uni terminus instead of Garden City Interchange.

As all P services are being phased out, P546 loses its P, and now stops at Elizabeth Street Stop 82, Edward Street Stop 146 near Margaret St & Alice Street Stop 102 at George St

Express services 551, 561, 573, 575 & P581 (becoming just ‘581’) move up the road to Elizabeth Street Stop 81 and will add Alice Street Stop 100 at Albert Street. The current Edward Street stop remains.

Routes 554, 576 & 578 get extended from Garden City Interchange to Griffith University Terminus (so no non TfB services use the Garden City Interchange now).

555 - this is the big one, and one one I’m not too thrilled about personally. 555 gets removed from Elizabeth Street and Creek Street entirely (and therefore away from all the Clarks express services), and is relocated over to Adelaide Street. It will now use:

They’re also both adding a 5:15am inbound service, and removing the 7:07am inbound 555, which was added initially to relieve demand on the 7:15am service. I know the 7:07am is still very heavily used, especially if express services are delayed or, in recent times, cancelled so this may not be a great move.

Routes 566 & 571 are being killed off, with those services rolled into their everyday counterparts terminating at Loganholme, while the P569 (to be just ‘569’) gets 13 more services each day to compensate for the loss of the other expresses.

However, the award for the most odd change goes to the 575: you know the extension to the route added just last month that saw it wind its way along Cinderella Drive, Fitzgerald Avenue, then up and along Logan Road & Underwood Road to Rochedale Station? That’s all gone! It looks like it will continue to service both Springwood Station and the Sports Drive stop, but with Cinderella & Fitzgerald gone, I’m guessing it may now service Sports Road first, then go down to the Station (using Platform 1 or 2) and then onto the busway.

My understanding is it kinda has to, because the flythrough videos of the connection between the Adelaide St tunnel and the Victoria Bridge showed they’re eliminating the right turn from the bridge to William St. The remaining choices are either to go to Adelaide St (surface or tunnel) or go to QSBS. And there’s no motorway exit between Elizabeth and Turbot, so it’d be a bit painful to move the Clarks express services over to Adelaide St to match the 555.

Ironically, looking at Clarks’ Facebook page over the past few weeks, it’s the 7.07am 555 service that’s been repeatedly cancelled due to driver availability. Maybe that’s the reason it’s getting canned, the drivers just aren’t there to supply both, and they’re now choosing the express services over the extra 555.

Oh yeah, you’re right. I had looked at both the flythrough and some of the plans, but I hadn’t noticed the elimination of the right turn from the Victoria Bridge to William Street (it’s not as noticeable as the more physical removal of the left turn from William Street to the Victoria Bridge with physical build-outs added). I assume they intend to run a simultaneous into/out of QSBS sequence at the lights, hence the removal of the right turn.

Do we know if the BNBN plan involves adding new bus stops to the CBD? I came across this little notice zip tied to what is currently just a loading zone near the corner of Charlotte Street & Market Street, next to Pack & Send and Malt Restaurant.

Does this notice indicate that they intend to turn it into a bus stop or something?

ABC have compiled a lot of the changes and information on their site

Not a bad effort by ABC, but it still doesn’t mention the CBD bus stop changes, nor changes to Redlands and Logan routes.

I feel these changes are the lest reported on ones of the whole BNBN rollout, and will catch people out on Monday (especially people using routes that service new, different stops inbound and outbound).

They will also be allowing a right turn from Queen St Bus Station into North Quay which isn’t on the diagram there. The 330, 450, 453, 454 & 460 will be using it.

Not according to the map for the 330, 450 & 460 at least. These three services are turning left onto William Street, left into Elizabeth and left onto George Street.

Plenty of advertising around Indooropilly which is great to see.

This is from the BNBN website. It’s also consistent with what I’ve heard from my sources too. I believe this is the route drivers are being trained on.

They are really making Roma Street the main transfer hub, aren’t they?

If that is the case, it might be worth telling Translink that their route maps are incorrect:

Looking at some photos I’ve taken at the intersection, it does look like the traffic island design has been modified to allow for right hand turns out of the station. Maybe they had concerns about the amount of buses they intend to funnel down Elizabeth Street?

If we’re going to include a right hand turn from QSBS to North Quay, that’s going to mess up traffic light sequencing as it would require a sequence where all inbound lanes stop. I had imagined traffic light sequencing would be something like this:

Sequence 1: Bridge to North Quay, Adelaide St aboveground or tunnel to Bridge, Pedestrian scatter crossing between Reddacliff Place, Treasury Building & Queens Wharf Road/Ferry lift/bridge

Sequence 2: Bridge to North Quay (Cont.), Adelaide Street tunnel or aboveground to Bridge, North Quay to William Street/QSBS

Sequence 3: Pedestrian crossing over North Quay, Bridge to QSBS, QSBS to Bridge, QSBS to William Street (Cont.)

With the right turn to North Quay, you have to add

Sequence 4: - QSBS to North Quay, with QSBS to Bridge and QSBS to William Street being the only other directions you could run at the same time during the sequence.

I guess you could combine it with Sequence 3 to make Sequence 3A: (as per sequence 3 above) and then Sequence 3b: where the North Quay pedestrian crossing and Bridge to QSBS stop to allow for QSBS to North Quay, QSBS to Bridge and QSBS to William Street.

Looks like PDF timetables for BNBN have been uploaded to TransLink website.
