Bus Services and related infrastructure

Love this - I think even getting this to Skygate would be helpful for Logan.

Getting to Skygate from Logan isn’t that much of a challenge - 555 to Mt Gravatt, 590 to Skygate. All they need to do is BUZ the 590, and we’d be set.

I would like to see the 590 run every 15 minutes during the daytime, but I’m not sure there’s enough demand in the evenings (DFO closes at 6). Maybe every 30 minutes after 7 would be sufficient?

I think that would be a perfectly reasonable compromise.

Is there anything stopping RCC from upgrading Capalaba Bus stop ahead of the Metro rollout since they’re forced to wait for BCC to quit dragging it’s feet?

I mocked up an idea of what a potential revamped Capalaba bus station would look like if metros were added. Also dumped the Park & Ride, morphed it in with the existing station.
The 267 would also be removed and the 250 would be the main link between Cleveland-Capalaba.

Click on each stop to see what services it.
Black lines are Metro stations and Red lines are local bus stations

I was thinking instead of getting rid of route 19 when construction of those new stations are finished, they should keep it and extend it from PA hospital to RBH via Kangaroo Point and the Story Bridge. This service is great as it fills in service gaps as well as connects local streets to the train stations. It would also provide a full time service for people to get from KP to the busway and train station at Boggo Road or the Valley.

As this is already funded extending funding and making permanent would be a great transport asset for Brisbane.

I noticed in the 03Mar26 BCC public transport committee presentation that they had edited out the route number on their signature BNBN stock photo to remove the 174 reference:

I then had it pointed out to me that the 2026 BCC finalist for Bus Driver of the Year video shows a Virginia driver in Sherwood’s blue livery S3023 (TMR’s 209) showing “City BUZ 350” throughout the video.

Either:

  1. There isn’t a standard 350 desto available on the TMR fleet and it was some weirdly picked consat desto override
  2. TMR/Consat version of the 350 desto is wrong
  3. There’s a new BUZ coming (We can dream right? :upside_down_face:)

I’ve been told it’s this one.

^ Weird coincidence but the default / test display in Mobitec products for a good while was “Brisbane 350”.

This image you shared says it all:

“Competes with heavy rail”…

This is exactly what shouldn’t be happening. Complementing, yes. Competing, NO! I get they’re talking about capacity on some routes, but it’s still the underlying principle that is a massive issue.

Rail and bus have different functions and roles. It should stay that way. The sooner PT in Brisbane reflects this the better off the whole city will be.

“provides a full capacity potential”… what is this supposed to even mean, ChatGTP word-salad garbage?

Are they talking about how many buses they go full capacity, or are they talking about the busway capacity which is already full? - Either way why say this at all?

It’s like they’re trying to pad out a minimum word count.

Kelly Stothard can catch a bus from near her home to all of Brisbane’s biggest shopping centres: Chermside, Carindale, Garden City and Indooroopilly.

But the Great Circle Line – 598 anti-clockwise or 599 clockwise – is a slow-moving beast.

“I’d love to be able to catch it on a Sunday with the kids and take them to other places or even just do the round trip.”

“The only issue I have … is that it doesn’t run on Sundays or public holidays, which leaves you either having to find an alternative or driving to your location.

In my opinion you can say that buses should complement rail as much as you want but QR has absolutely no interest in facilitating that, asking QR station staff any question related to the buses is an exercise in futility. Despite buses being more used than the railways, generally providing superior frequencies, not constantly shutting down on weekends, actually attempts reforms, puts some effort into providing services that actually cater to the higher density areas where there are actually good prospects for demand (citygliders, metro, nightlink services that are more than a single run) to me shows that QR’s management shares at least as much blame for PT situation in SEQ as BCC. BCC is at least directly accountable to the people while QR seems to be utterly recalcitrant and unable to meet the challenge of furthering the public transport system in SEQ.

From the article:

"During consultation for Brisbane’s bus network shakeup, people said they wanted more Great Circle Line services on weekends, higher frequency, extra destinations and better transfers between the bus and train services.

People also asked for the route (the GCL) to be split into sections or to follow a more direct path to improve on-time running and reliability. But no changes were made.

Busfluencer Aidan Ameer said on a Sunday, with no Great Circle Line running, a bus trip from Acacia Ridge to Sunnybank Hills Shoppingtown would take more than an hour and require a change at Mater Hill. Driving would take just 10 minutes.

Hayward said a trial of increased frequency on the Great Circle Line would be worthwhile. If that was too expensive, it could have truncated services added along the route where there was demand for travel to places like schools and shops."

Why didn’t The Brisbane Times approach BTQ about this matter?

Does BTQ have contact with or engage with such ‘businfluencers’.

I’m sure there are issues on all sides.

My main point though is there seems to be a view that other modes are the “enemy” and the “threat”. As long as this view exists (no matter where that view is held) the city is worse off.

I realise there will be places that need more high capacity bus options in Brisbane, but the integration between modes is shocking, and my impression is that BCC is the worst out of them all. Having said that, I’m sure QR play a part as well.

Either way, the situation is ridiculous and this tribal mentality when it should be about working together for the greater good has to change.

The solution is giving ALL modes over to Translink as a single governing body rather than BCC/QR as the main instigators of such a mess.
That being said, I feel like the Metro is a way to compete with trains

I’ve just been in WA for 6 days and on coming back I don’t know whether to laugh or cry. They sorted out all this nonsense decades ago and it really shows.

I get what you mean, BCC absolutely has their own problems. But I really don’t think that BCC actually competes against QR even if they say it does because QR’s efforts set so low of a bar that if BCC lowered themselves to QR’s level it would make public transport worse for everyone. QR’s efforts are simply unsuitable for serving Brisbane residents, I feel that if BCC tried to run buses as a complement to rail services rather than as the main form of public transport within the Brisbane LGA, the low frequencies of the rail services would make trips for everyone longer due to increased transfer times and the fact that lines like the Beenleigh line are often quite slow. To me the actions of QR and the state government undermine effective public transport in Brisbane far more than BCC undermines public transport in SEQ.
