Also roadworks towards the bridge today - lane closed. No idea if it’s related though

Could just standard re-ballasting works - looks similar to how Taringa did when they re-ballasted the main line a few years ago

Seems like prep for regular maintenance - Manly to Cleveland closure 24-26 January amongst the December/January extended closures for CRR works.

An upgrade program involving level crossing removals, electrification of the third track for actual peak express service and relocation/merging of certain stations (think Union Station in Melbourne, but for Murrarie/Cannon Hill) would be the ultimate solution.

The Cleveland line is such a janky legacy item that QR and the government cannot be bothered to fix.

I reckon that (speaking as an active user of it) we should have:

- Sth Brisbane
- South Bank
- Boggo Road
- Buranda
- Cooparoo (upgrade with LX removal)
- Norman Park
- Morningside
- Cannon Hill/Murrarie (merge the two with a move to Creek Road)

- Lindum
- Wynnum Central (skyrail it)
- Manly
- Lota
- Birkdale (island platform it)
- Wellington Point
- Ormiston
- Cleveland

I agree with a lot of what you’ve said - especially the merging of Murarrie and Cannon Hill and the sky rail portions. My questions though:

Are you wanting to remove Hemmant? Even though the area is hardly a bustling metropolis, it’s the only public transport the area has.

Even though I agree with merging Cannon Hill and Murarrie, this does leave a big distance between there and Morningside. I’ve wondered about a station at Colmslie where the line crosses with Wynnum Road. I know it’s reasonably close to Morningside station but the area is reasonably densely populated. What are your thoughts?

I concur, Hemmant should remain, it’s the only form of public transport in the area (currently) and services not only the residential area but also the industrial area. Even if a full time bus service came to the area, it’d still be appropriate to keep Hemmant station, as I when I looked at the geography of the area, it made more sense to send a bus service to the nearest shopping centre at Wynnum Plaza, if you had to send a bus service to Lindum then to Wynnum, it becomes quite convoluted.

I actually used Hemmant station when I was in my late teens when I was doing an administration traineeship at QBuild Industries which used to be right next door to the station back in the early 00s.

With the Lindum Station accessibility upgrade now complete, the project is ready to move into its next phase starting with relocating underground electrical cables. Energex will manage these relocations which are expected to begin in mid-June. These early works are a key step in preparing the site ahead of major construction, which is planned to commence in mid 2027 I look forward to discovering what it’s like to be a Gold Coast line use…

Just reading a lot of the comments above in this thread.

My two cents from being a Cleveland line passenger for over 20 years, with Birkdale/Wellington Point being my local stations during my time living with family in the Redlands. I found that it was not really attractive to catch an all stations train from as far out as Birkdale/Wellington Point to the city, due to a few reasons, distance, the circuitous route the Cleveland line takes (which is due to historical reasons), and a few slow parts of the line that has a lot of bends, forcing the train to slow down (Lota-Manly, Hemmant-Murarrie, Morningside-Norman Park).

Personally, my two cents on the Cleveland line, I would straighten the line up between Hemmant and Murarrie, removing as many bends as possible, relocate Cannon Hill station to align next to Creek Road and close both the current Murarrie station and Cannon Hill stations, removing the LXs in the process, duplicate the line all the way to Cleveland (realistically that won’t happen until post CRR), and introduce a two tier service, with Cleveland trains running every 15mins running express from Manly to a relocated Cannon Hill, and an all day 7 day a week Manly and/or Lota service running all stations to Ferny Grove, which would give roughly a 7.5 service from Cannon Hill to Roma Street, 15min service from Manly to Cannon Hill and a 15min service from Cleveland to Manly (you would manipulate and model the timetable to achieve this). Ferny Grove would then end up with a 7.5 min frequency 7 days a week, which then could push for an argument to densify the corridor for housing.

An alternative would be under the assumption that the NW corridor is built for rail (honestly I think it’d end up too expensive to build it splitting off from CRR unfortunately, plus those stubs were scrapped, cheaper option is keeping all above ground and splitting it off from Alderley station), and the Cleveland services could then split off from Alderley to head up towards Caboolture or Redcliffe Peninsula or Petrie, ending up with a in theory 7.5 min frequency from Boggo Road to Alderley and a 15min frequency from Alderley to Ferny Grove, which would include slots for a higher frequency during peak hour on the FG line.

At the very least though, duplication of the line from Manly to Cleveland (along with relevant upgrades of the stations along that section of track to bring them up to modern DDA standards) and the removal of LXes would be a nice start.

If I didn’t have to interchange and suffer the wait times at Carindale which at times can be horrible then the 250-222 option from Carindale is seriously competitive outside of peak hour traffic.

I love the regional suburban feel of the outer local stations here in the Redlands (Wellington Point in particular, although Birkdale is my go to) but the lack of investment from anyone seriously sucks. There’s little notice of when the next service is, staff are now pretty much non-existent and it’s such a long journey (although admittedly one I’ve come to love to do jamming out to music for an hour and enjoying the little things)

Can’t wait until the Olympics when everyone piles onto an already crowded line in peak hour that can’t manage peak after 7.30am and no expresses before 5.15pm to reach the whitewater facilities at Birkdale 😃

Even if they’d just at the very least extend the all day 15 minute services to Manly and Shorncliffe that’d be a nice start too. That could pretty much be done tomorrow (well at least after the union dramas are sorted).

There’s apparently some question about whether all day 15 minute services can be reliably operated to the single track and platform at Shorncliffe, but Manly certainly.

Hi guys, if anyone can shed some light on the access paths to Buranda station, looking at google maps and streetview from 2023 there appears to be an access path near the rail over road bridge on logan road but now when i go there now its closed off by fences and I have to walk around through the parking lot on the field opposite the student accommodation building, and this path is not visible in the translink station locality map. Does this mean that it use to be there before they rebuilt the station and its been permanently removed because there is still a sign pointing in that direction for the train station.

Yes I think that’s right. The path was there but closed off post station redevelopment.

I could be making this up, but I think there was some vague reasoning that there is development pending on the vacant site that would involve rebuilding that access?

The Shorncliffe line definitely can reliably run every 15min all day. Taking the 7:09am Shorncliffe-Cleveland train for instance, the train departs Sandgate station at 7:02am and arrives Shorncliffe station at 7:05am. Afterward turning back, the same train departs Shorncliffe station at 7:09am and departs Sandgate station at 7:11am. This means from 7:02 to 7:11, the single-track to Shorncliffe is used for 8-9min, allowing for 6-7 minutes of waiting time until next train comes, which is an adequate margin to reliably have trains running every 15min.

In case a train is delayed to the point where it will conflict with the next train, then the delayed train can be stowed at the final spur right next to Friday St. After the succeeding train arrives at Shorncliffe station, the stowed train can use the passing loop to essentially skip Shorncliffe station, immediately serving Sandgate station while the train on the Shorncliffe platform is in the process of turning back.

I know this strategy of dealing with delayed Shorncliffe trains is a bit messy compared to duplicating the Shorncliffe line, but it is a solution for a lack of a second platform at Shorncliffe station. With ETCS improving turnback times and the Shorncliffe line being paired with the more reliable Springfield line, Shorncliffe trains could run every 10min during peak-hour due to the higher margin and lower chance for delay.

Ok first off ETCS will not speed up turn around times at the end of line the driver does not just sit down and start driving they still need to do the set up amd then the etcs set up so it wont make this faster. Second the loop road at Shorncliffe is not a signalled route so no they will not be able to just push a train into the loop while a train arrives on the platform. Sorry but pointing out whats actually at Shorncliffe
