Cleveland line extension would not be fast or direct enough unfortunately.
The Cleveland line takes about 1 hour from Roma St to Cleveland. If this line was extended to Victoria Pt, it would take even longer, giving a journey time similar to the direct bus while also not servicing Capalaba, Carindale and the Old Cleveland Rd corridor.
LRT would incur the cost of busway conversion, cannot cross the Victoria Bridge (weight limit) or handle the gradient or curves in QSBS (and likely Adelaide St tunnel). In contrast, the heavy rail option already has access via the Merivale Bridge in this section.
Redlands, like many LGAs immediately outside of BCC has very poor PT and very poor mode share.
My initial thought is why Alberton? It’s basically cane fields and a few hundred people.
If you could get it to go through Eagleby, it might be a bit more worthwhile, but there’s also a whole heap of not much between Eagleby and Redland Bay. This area is better served by buses IMO.
Like Metro said, a new line via OCR would be a far more useful proposition.
There is a big Question Mark over what will be developed at Norwell on the cane fields. The Council and the State are seriously looking at the development potential of the land and the necessary basic services that need to be provided (road, water, sewer). Depending on the potential yield, it may also need more than a district centre level of access - in which case a rail connection could be useful and should be planned for.
It may be beneficial for BTQ to have a policy position in its pocket about this growth area and any necessary PT options for when options come of out for public consultation, lest we end up with the Waraba scenario where all PT plans have been shelved and no space reserved in the corridor / town centre for linehaul PT.
Well that ties into the idea of a station at Alberton/Norwall.
Extend it through up to Vicky Pt and utilise feeder buses to go between a Metro service at Capalaba and the Cleveland Line at Cleveland
