I’m curious what other members think of the idea of a (maybe partial) triplication of the Ipswich line west of Darra. This would enable 4 tph off-peak services, and possibly the operation of a peak-direction “superb express” starting from Rosewood, all to Ipswich, then Redbank, Goodna, Darra, Indooroopilly, and Milton. It would also be useful for future Toowoomba trains.

Does anyone know how far triplication would need to go to allow this service to operate?

If you take Northgate-Petrie as an example, that’s 7.6km (roughly Darra-Goodna) but 9 stations skipped (Wacol through East Ipswich is 10). The Redcliffe all-stops takes 25 minutes, and on the Ipswich side that’s Darra-Booval (or Ipswich-Wacol).

For expressing I think the time is more important than the distance. If the express needs to do some sort of overtake, that’s something like 4 “slots” of all-stops runtime if the express goes twice as fast as the all-stopper.

So the main takeaway is that the extra tracks aren’t really needed on the long stretch between Darra and Wacol (which would be ~negligible property impact), they’re needed between Ipswich and Wacol where the all-stoppers have to go slow.

There have been various proposals over the years to triplicate the line. I think it needs to be done now from Darra West to at least Redbank, possibly further. The corridor is wide enough.
