Lindum to Manly Skyrail Proposal

Also Murarrie, similar to Lindum it has a lot of industrial activity nearby

The neat part about ending it where it is, is that I’m 98% sure the land slopes down from Gordon Pde to Pine St by quite a bit, so that’s a natural transition point. There’s also plenty of distance and it’s fairly straight.

Yeah that’s almost certainly right

So Basically adding to this, I think we should initiate what I am going to refer to as the Lindum-Cleveland Rail Upgrade Plan.

Basically from Lindum to Manly, a mix of cuttings and skyrail to allow grade separation, then from Manly to Cleveland, double tracking and upgrades to allow grade separation stations. I think we really need to get a business case on this (like do our own study) and then present our findings to the Government. Now I’m certainly not an expert but to allow for all the works to happen, if it were all to be done in one go, we may require 12-18 month closure and have buses replacing trains between Lindum and Cleveland. I’m basing this timeframe on similar shutdowns including Perths Armadale Line Shutdown as well as Sydney’s conversion of the Bankstown Line to Metro. Alternatively we could split the project into two stages, but if we go that way, disruptions, though smaller in scale, would be spread across a longer timeframe. I’m pretty sure we could get much of this work done in a single 12-18 month shutdown. Also I would recommend building a new stabling facility to cater for the lines growth in the future. Currently their a no stabling yards on the Cleveland line other than at Manly but that yard is quite small and only has two tracks. I have looked at some potential spots on the Cleveland line and figured Thorneside has the most space for a larger stabling facility. Another pro is much of that is occupied by a redundant turn around track and thus, most of it is probably already land owned by Queensland Rail. However, again proper business case would need to be required to determine the best spot for a stabling yard.

I think that’d be great. I have thought about that spot for a stabling yard as well. If I remember correctly I think there is plans in the original drawings for stabling facilities at Birkdale next to the station. If it went there I’d propose relocating Thorneside to that spot which would make it closer to more people in terms of walking distance, and I’d consider turning that plot of land into a park n ride as there are a lot of city commuters in that area.

Here is how we could manage the replacement buses during a shutdown of the line between Lindum and Cleveland. CRB basically means Cleveland Rail Bus. Also CRB4 would run directly into the city. The white dots are stops.

1 & 2 would run in both weekdays and weekends, whilst 3 & 4 would be weekday only.

Is there any potential/merit in tying this idea with a duplication and extension of the Cleveland line to Victoria Point and running it similar to how the Gold Coast/Beenleigh lines work (i.e: have an all stops service to Manly and have an express service to Birkdale only stopping at Cannon Hill and Manly)

I guess there are sequencing and priority points - duplicating Manly-Cleveland is more important than this skyrail proposal, but also from a line perspective you probably want to work from the inside out?

A Lindum-Cleveland upgrade project, how feasible would that be/ballpark cost (incl. the usual QLD blowouts and cancellation + resurrection)

:+1: We need more/better heavy rail in SEQ!

My reasoning for doing it in one shot is mostly for efficiency.

Cost would be anywhere from $2 Billion in the lower end to $4 Billion on the higher end to do all of this I believe.
