A proposal for a new Tolled Motorway connecting the Redlands.

This would ease congestion off Old Cleveland Road and provide an Alternative to the Pacific Motorway by connecting the Eastern Suburbs of Brisbane to the Coomera Connector. Busway infrastructure would be included as part of the upgrade of Old Cleveland Road between Carindale and Capalaba. The Eastern Connector Tunnel would include Three Bored Tunnels. Two of them would carry Road Traffic and one would carry a busway with no intermediate stops between Greenslopes and Carindale. This would allow for High Speed Brisbane Metro services to reach Capalaba

I think it would be a great idea, unfortunately it seems the only way we get major new motorways built in the future likely will be only by toll roads. I could honestly even see the Pimpama to Logan portion of the Coomera Connector being tolls

Whilst I certainly do believe the Redlands will require another major arterial road in the future, I’m not sure if this will be the best approach.

I think we will need to make Old-Cleveland Road east of the Gateway full limited access at some point. Same with sections of Mount Cotton and Redland Sub-Arterial Roads. Road upgrades, bypasses of certain sections and select grade separation on some intersections will certainly be necessitated.

A route like Option 3 in the original South Coast Motorway planning may provide an arterial spine alternative to these routes once needed. This allows a connection between the Gateway Motorway and the Coomera Connector without using the 8MP-Loganholme section of the Pacific Motorway.

Whilst demand will exist for major transport options in the Southern Redlands in a longer-term view, if it is needed, surely it is better to cater for this growth with public transport?

I am committed to mode neutrality so am open minded about proposals, even motorway ones.

One of the issues that this, or any motorway proposal has in the area, is how it is going to connect to the city.

See, once this motorway gets to Carindale, where does it go next? It would have to dump traffic on to the SE Freeway, putting massive pressure on the SE Freeway and the Captain Cook Bridge.

Also, there is good reason to believe that Brisbane Metro buses (or busways) are not the right mode for beyond Carindale.

Rail would be a better option as it could (a) plug into the Cleveland Line, (b) not put pressure on the Cultural Centre (capacity chokepoint) or Captain Cook Bridge (mixed traffic and congestion) and (c) could travel at much higher speed if built to modern design standards and widely spaced stops (e.g. 160 km/hr).

That higher speed is important when longer distances are involved.

It is a much better mode for long distance than a BCC bus.

Ill have to agree with Metro on this one.

I know a lot of locals particularly in Eagleby have had opposition to the Coomera Connector project. Adding another motorway, particularly through rural, mountainous terrain through Carbrook is expensive and is most likely going to be fiercely protested by locals.

If you cut the motorway back at Redland Bay, you might have some good motorway infrastructure, but at that point, you might as well upgrade existing road infrastructure, since you really aren’t building anything new, and at that point, something like a busway extension from Capalaba to Redland bay becomes significantly cheaper and better to justify as a long term solution.

Better yet, get express heavy rail that bypasses Wynnum entirely.

From Carindale to Green Slopes it’s a tunnel. Long term I would consider extending the tunnel to create a proper East West link to the centenary Highway (which will include extending the busway from St Lucia to Indro)

Any proposed works through Carbrook won’t just be fiercely protested by locals, but would plow through portions of the half dozen or so adjacent, sprawling conservation areas that exist between Mt Cotton Road and Sepentine Creek Road which I think would throw up significant environmental roadblocks.

I feel what the Government envisions, by having the connection between the Coomera Connector at Fryar Road and across the river to Skinners Road & Mt Cotton Road, is effectively Option 2 - Mt Cotton Road (through future improvements) to effectively serve as this arterial route. It’s generally much more palatable to widen an existing corridor through an important conservation precinct than to push brand new corridors through it.

Mt Cotton Road provides good existing access to Redland Bay and Victoria Point via Valley Way/German Church Road and Double Jump Road/Bunker Road respectively, while up the top of the road it connects to Duncan Road/Boundary Road which goes into Thornlands and connects to the main drags up to Cleveland. There would still be the option to continue up to Lyndon Road/Vienna Road to get to Finucane Road (which is what Old Cleveland Road turns into after the Old Cleveland Road East intersection), but I would hope that the western stretch of Mt Cotton Road and Mt Gravatt Capalaba Road could be increased in prominence to try and promote that corridor over Old Cleveland Road.

The southern end of Options 3-6 I don’t think would fly today for similar environmental reasons to what I mentioned above.

Environmental conservation won’t be an issue. Much of it runs through current private farmland or property
