The Tennyson line served as the first rail connection between the southern lines and the rest of the network, prior to the Merivale Bridge being built.

The last regular passenger service along the line connected South Brisbane with Corinda and ran on 3rd June 2011.

It has always been used extensively by freight from the western lines to the Port, and also continues to connect the southern lines to the city if needed (for example, during certain Cross River Rail construction disruptions).

Reading some history on the Tennyson Line, incl pre-Merivale bridge, removal as a passenger line (June 2011), and continued use for freight to/from the port, etc …

So dropping this line for passengers was due to low numbers so didn’t make sense to keep the service - fair enough. QR has also now removed the line from all network maps (or at least passenger facing-maps) but I’ve read that there has been petitions and requests to re-open it for passengers. The QR response, if I have it right, was that maintenance and opening new stations and service would be too costly (for any gain). But why would any new stations be required? Re-opening Tennyson station would cost a lot, so don’t re-open this station (the tennis centre is serviced by the Yeerongpilly station). Given the lines are electric and some maintenance is ongoing already, as QR use the line to shift trains between the GC and Springfield/Rosewood due to CRR disruptions or other reasons (no passengers onboard). I’ve looked up the track info and if I have that right, there is no need for any new tracks or stations for the following …

So here’s my proposal - create a looping circuit, stopping all stations between Roma st to Sherwood, then transit **the Tennyson Line** to Yeerongpilly, then onto Dutton Park/Boggo Rd and back to Roma St via the Merivale bridge. A single train (6 car set) leaves every hour on the hour from Roma St and loops back to Roma St using the existing tracks and stations listed above (stopping all stations). With the new ETCS system, trains can be integrated (shared tracks where needed) and more closely operated. I’m sure there’s complications but with some brain power (and AI), it’s surely a possibility (or get something close to it - may be hold at certain stations or skip one or two as required for integration and avoid issues with express trains, etc). It could be painted maroon/blue/gold (thinking Lions) so it could be easily ID on track. I live in Taringa and work in Dutton Park so would use it to get to work. But right now I’d need to go to Roma, change trains to a southern train and it would take 40 to 54 min\* (Nambour vs Kippa-ring, as both lines go to Roma) and 54 min journey is due to having to walk from Boggo Rd.

\*It’s the Q3 hols, so Dutton Park isn’t open but would shave a few minutes off (bar the extra stop to the next station/Dutton Park).

Thoughts?

Isnt there a bus that does it?

There’s lots of bus options … can also take 444 into UQ, walk to UQ lakes and use M2 to PAH. That’s about 53 minutes.

I can ride my bike (about 5km) from Taringa to Dutton Park within 20 min (via the green bridge).

A train would be faster than any bus option, although slower than riding (even with end-of-ride use of facilities to shower and dress for work).

I have often thought this would be great for a Beenleigh/GC connection and Springfield/ Ipswich rather than having to travel to Roma St

Ideally post CRR we would have Doomben Services going via Sth Brisbane, Via Yeerongpilly and terminate at Corinda Platform 1. Then have GC Services stop (again) at Yeerongpilly.

The only issue is the flat junction at Yeerongpilly. Stopping traffic when going up via Tennyson and no return path to a platform at Yeerongpilly when heading back down to Doomben.

There is major works currently happening at the Yeerongpilly Junction but I as far as I can see there won’t be any changes to the down path.

Ok … to clarify. My proposal is only one-way … anticlockwise direction. This is to minimise cost and be able to implement without new infrastructure. My proposal would need some human capital too plan and a coat of paint (but not necessary). Looking at the current track alignment there’s no work required. If it’s successful (over 15 years since track closed to passengers so has potential), dual direction could be built but would need millions. I wonder if the previous setup was more to blame on poor passenger uptake, than just having low numbers. I reckon my proposal (apologies if anyone else had already conceived it) could be a winner!

Not going to happen, as it would break sectorisation. The only way Doomben trains will get to Tennyson is via Milton. I don’t hate the idea of this happening, but it would most likely require an extra terminating platform at Yeerongpilly.

Considering Yeerongpilly is now 3 platforms with a passing track as well, wouldn’t that be sufficient considering that when the Tennyson line use to operate the station was only 2 platforms?

I unfortunately don’t see them adding any more stops to the GC line, particularly around Moorooka considering it is the only part that has 4 tracks where I guess they will overtake the Beenleigh line

This section is really the opposite to what you think the section between dutton park and kuraby, especially north of salisbury will be the place to have more gold coast line stops because it won’t be on the 4 track section, only the 3 track section. In which during off peak times only the two will be used similar to now.

I do really support a 4th track between yeerongpilly and salisbury to help keep freight seperate and effectively increase the triple track section but it’s not to be.
