Qld’s EV bus program quietly canned as new vehicles slow to trickle
The government has quietly scrapped its statewide electric bus mandate, leaving Queensland lagging behind Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide in the race to electrify public transport
The State Government has quietly canned a 2022 Labor mandate that all new Queensland buses be electric, saying it was “tech agnostic’’ despite Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide and Sydney embracing EVs.
The revelation came as Brisbane City Council confirmed that only 63 new buses had joined its fleet of more than 1200 since 2021/22, while 47 were taken off the road. Council has also bought 60 electric Metro vehicles.
Both the bus union and the manufacturing union have called for at least 100 more just to meet demand ahead of the 2032 Olympics and the imminent retirement of ageing gas buses..
