The Grattan Instute has recently released their report “Wasted Space”, which highlights the social and financial costs of parking minimums, and how axing them for residential buildings could dramatically reduce housing costs and improve our quality of life. BTQ supports this move - more space in cities should be dedicated to things like parks, shops, and dense housing instead of places to store private vehicles when not in use. Idk about reducing housing costs because developers will still try to sell to highest bidder. We are one of the best places in the whole world right now and the property prices obviously reflect it. The privilege of even living here, let alone owning property now, is a luxury.
Keep parking at stations just bury the parking underground beneath TOD. That way there is still parking for commuters, parking for local residents living in the apartments above and it’s shaded. A win win. Don’t forget to add a further layer of parking for a shopping centre complex that’s connected to the station, all finished with a basement bus station located beneath the train station. Depending on topography of the area, you can even build over the train station and Valhalla no one would even know it’s there (except for the signage that gives it away)
Sorry if the wording wasn’t clear, the report is looking at construction costs (as in, how much to build) not housing prices. Like you said the market is completely divorced from reality so whether or not that gets passed on to the consumer is a whole different question.
Underground parking is hugely expensive. Can be hundreds of thousands of dollars each and that just adds to the cost of any buildings above. You really need to decide whether a single car park is worth that compared to what else you could do, such as all day frequent buses.
Buses don’t work for everyone though. In my part of the suburb, buses can’t even fit on the streets or get through that ridiculous tight roundabout, it’s that tight even the garbage truck has gotten itself stuck there numerous times
