2032 - Brisbane Olympics

The CM is running a 12 page spread on the Olympics today. Be interesting to know if transport is highlighted.

The only thing I predict it will generate is day long traffic congestion!

and overcrowded trains and buses?

Government Statement: 7 Years to Go: Queensland celebrates 2032 milestone

… "Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie said the Government remained firmly on track with its 2032 Delivery Plan.

“We’ve kickstarted the delivery of 2032 Games infrastructure, with venue procurement and site investigations now underway in Brisbane, Logan, Moreton Bay, the Sunshine Coast and Cairns,” Deputy Premier Bleijie said.

“We’re also delivering the roads, rail and infrastructure to support the delivery of these legacy venues, creating a more connected Queensland for 2032 and beyond.” …

Government Statement: Games Infrastructure Authority appoints new CEO

Nothing on PT that I could see except for an article regarding the upgrade of the Airport which is expected to open later this year. The seamless entry to the domestic terminal from the station and the carpark will be open in a month or two.

I have actually met Simon Crooks on several occasions as part of Brisbane Open House events relating to the Queen’s Wharf project, for which Crooks was project director. Each time, he came across as a very approachable person who was extremely passionate about the QW project (he personally was involved in tours of Destination Brisbane Consortium’s Old Printing Office HQ, and gave short public talks about the project personally). I would even go as far as say that his passion for the project probably played a part in being able to get the damn thing built in the end, in spite of The Star’s troubles.

I think he’s a good choice for GIICA.

Government Statement: Delivering for 2032 and Beyond: Early works to kickstart showgrounds transformation

The Crisafulli Government has today announced that the Brisbane Showgrounds will be transformed after this year’s Ekka with early works to commence within weeks, marking an important milestone in the delivery of this legacy infrastructure for 2032 and beyond.

The Bowen Hills showgrounds will be the site of the Brisbane Athletes Village, which will be the Games’ largest, accommodating more than 10,000 athletes and officials during the Olympic Games and over 5,000 during the Paralympic Games.

As well as housing the Brisbane Athletes Village, an upgrade to the 20,000 seat Main Arena will facilitate the growth of the precinct’s key entertainment and events capability and give the iconic Brisbane Ekka an even brighter future. …

Time has been largely wasted. Genuine concerns with the various deadlines have many

With so many concurrent projects let’s hope PT projects survive intact.

I lowkey kinda want our transport to fail for the Olympics so the world laughs at us and maybe that will bring some ambition

Well what did Sydney achieve with their transport legacy for the 2000 Olympics apart from the Airport line? It took them at least a decade to get their game up with public transport with the construction of Sydney Metro and the expansion of the light rail.

Maybe Brisbane will pretty much do the same thing as Sydney did, get the ball rolling on a major transport upgrade (that isn’t roads) after the Olympics; the transport chaos will be too huge for the government to ignore.

That’s why I’m so focused on projects getting locked in ASAP for completion after 2032.
We have a reasonable pipeline of projects currently planned for completion prior to the Olympics. Now I want GCLR stage 4 and other upgrades locked in for after the current projects are complete.

The main legacy should be about providing a network of 15 minute bus and train service, and a single integrated PT authority that fully replaces the current agencies.

All of this would be relatively cheap and fast to deliver in the current time window.

PTV has been absorbed into Transport Vic.

I don’t think the GC line nor the Sunny Coast line would support 15 min frequencies due to infrastructure constraints. At best it would be 20 mins or better.

I would like to see 20 mins or better with 9 car sets on sector 1.

From both Petrie and Loganlea we could see 15 mins or better all day.
