2032 - Brisbane Olympics

Well if the stadium is going to be in the centre of Victoria Park, my measurement puts it ~800 metre from Exhibition station.

According to quotes from Jarrod Bleijie, it is unlikely that there will be any Victoria Park Station.

And Bleijie said it was unlikely that master plan would include a new train station to service the Brisbane Stadium and National Aquatic Centre at Victoria Park.

There had been discussions between police, the Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Brisbane Organising Committee, Bleijie said, and there was confidence there would be ā€œgreat connectivity without necessarily having a new stationā€.

It would be great to see what modelling they have used to show that the existing network with an event overlay provides an acceptable outcome.

Rough plot shows the distance from Exhibition station to the position described as the probable location of the stadium.

As much as it would be nice to have a new station, if the stadium is in the middle of the park, it’s basically equidistant to Exhibition, Roma Street, QUT Kelvin Grove and Herston stations. With 4 stations to spread out the crowds that’s a much more effective means of crowd control. This has been done overseas for other events, I believe London Olympics if I recall correctly, so there is some academic thinking behind pushing the crowds out further to several stations to ease pressure.

Could even have way finding to separate crowds by service type. Sector 1 lines to to Exhibition, Sector 2-3 lines go to Roma Street. Buses north go to Herston, buses South go to QUT

Stratford is about 1km from the nearest edge of the London Stadium, but its a reasonably pleasant walk over generally flat land in a climate that isn’t sub-tropical.

Exactly. Quotes from the BT article [Gabba arena bids to close as state backs existing rail for Victoria Park]

Some obstacles remained, however, with the Olympic security overlay. While the Exhibition station would be well utilised in future events, the entire RNA precinct – including the station – will be under an intense security blanket during the Games.

ā€œ[The International Olympic Committee] take a very common-sense approach and if we can find solutions to the obstacles or problems, we do that,ā€ Blejie said.

Exhibition Station will really struggle as the main in/out station. It has shown that it is not fit for purpose during big events (recent music festival platform waiting, 2025 Ekka train overcrowding). I’m unsure if it even be accessible during the Olympics with the events happening there and with athlete accommodation.

Roma Street Station is about 2km towards, then across the ICB on the green bridge, then up and down Wickham St. This involves a 60m vertical climb and then back down to the station itself. It is a colourful area of town with limited ability to pedestrianise.

A Barrambin/Victoria Park Station isn’t just for the olympics, it’s an opportunity to get transport right for all future events. Proximity to busway is great, but moving spectators 50-100 at a time is not going to cut it. An Exhibition circuit with a new purpose built events grade station closer to the stadium would allow for quick and safe dispersal.

Spring Hill could really do with a train station!

Just look at the clear pedestrian connection - a large elevated walkway designed to accommodate mass safe exodus. I have heard that is part of the planning, that a station can’t be too close as to avoid rushing/crushing, that there is a sort of sweet spot.

Obligatory AI reference..

Typical preferred walking distances in the literature:

  • 400–800 m = ideal for crowd dispersion

  • <300 m = high-risk without very wide concourses and multiple exits

  • >1,000 m = compliance drops, safety issues increase post-event

800-1000m is absolutely not ideal in a subtropical climate.

Having been amongst sold out stadium crowds many times, people will choose to wait hours for rideshare/taxi, even in incredibly congested local streets, rather than walk that distance to public transport, and surrounding streets become congested with friends and family picking people up in private cars. It would be another typical Brisbane solution to a problem that could easily be solved with better public transport.

Yes, it’s true that at distances <300m the crowd dispersal choke points need to be designed carefully (this is somewhat a problem at the Adelaide Oval), but with a new stadium and station design this can be carefully considered.

Not to mention, this is not an arena with a single exit, this will be a large oval stadium with multiple exits, and the crowd will naturally divide between the rail and busway stations.

In fact, even if a Victoria Park station were built, it’s likely the walking distance to the platform could be >300m anyway, given the proposed location of the stadium.

Relying on Exhibition will be a nightmare - I think BTQ has an obligation to strongly advocate for a 3 platform event station.

Assuming the entrance is on the Springhill side, you’re over 400m easy. (rough estimates on the walking routes based on the images out today, obvs.)

Push people north/south to Exhibition, push people heading east to the busway/Metro, push people heading west to Roma Street. Like they do for Riverfire/New Years

They should at least build a busway spur from the inner northern busway directly under the stadium.

In the scheme of things that would be quite cheap to do as cut and cover.

Roma St is a fair distance from the proposed stadium site, probably too far at ~2km. I would expect most would head to the Exhibition station and change at Roma St for the western services. Perhaps they might get the bus to Roma St.

I am thinking public transport is not going to be ideal the way it is shaping up.

Still i think its better PT coverage than whats right now pre Gabba station….for Gabba stadium.

And theres also Suncorp feed by milton train, underground bus feeders and both bus and train at roma stations. …. VP will have more to feed on compared to earlier 2

The stadium being in the middle of the park really does not bode well for the preservation of the greenspace.

I’ve said it again: there are dozens of cities in the world that would pay anything to be able to go back in time and preserve their central parklands. And Brisbane is making a conscious decision to develop theirs. This is a generational mistake for a city to make.

Couldn’t agree more; it’s a very backwards decision. I would have much preferred Northshore Hamilton to be developed with a one-station extension of the Doomben line. It would have been much, much better for the city and probably an easier and cheaper build thanks to not having to design around other major areas such as a hospital, park, and major arterial roads.

Also much flatter land. Earthworks alone at Victoria Park could easily hit $50 million.

I can’t see the article to know what the 7 projects are but hopefully a good thing that CM is putting some focus on transport

7 transport upgrades Brisbane needs to get to Victoria Park 2032 Olympic stadium

We have the Olympic Stadium of the future concept – now we just need to get there. SPECIAL REPORT
