2032 - Brisbane Olympics

Cross River Rail on its own (even in its less than ideal final form) is still a transformative project, but I agree that we should be on the next thing already.

It was tongue in cheek. No one asked for a large aquatic centre and Swimming Australia is bankrolled by Gina.

I believe Swimming Australia was heavily campaigning for a new centre and moving Swimming Australia up to QLD making the new centre their HQ as a legacy venue.

When I mean no one asked for it. I mean it wasn’t on the GIICA recommendations and it was also to the detriment of Athletics Qld and Athletics Australia who got shafted as an outcome. I personally don’t see the need for a new swim HQ and think Swimming Australia is over funded and has some serious governance problems from their past with coaches. Part of the arguments has been to get more swimming competitions like Collegiate series, but these are not really a thing that Australia does with swimming like the US does, but I can see the quasi culture war appeal to the current Qld Government. It would have been more equitable to save on money with a drop in pool at Brisbane Live and used the savings to do more regional and suburban pool upgrades.

They should of moved the AIS up here too, as part of a modern QSAC precinct anywhere else but QE2/Nathan.

The latest AI render of Victoria Park has omitted swimming centre building.

Do we even need a ‘national’ aquatics centre at all?

Why not host the swimming at the Gold Coast where the Commonwealth Games were held.

This is because that render was provided by the architectural team that has been announced for the stadium. Anything beyond that is outside of their remit.

The winning architectural team for the aquatic centre hasn’t been announced at this stage, but it should be within the coming months.

The aquatic centre is in the coming months, but will be interesting to see what is proposed after the geological work as it’s the most problematic build in the area due to the limited space, the proximity to high voltage transmission, proximity to private schooling and a myriad of other reasons raised by the GIICA.

Personally I think the legacy venue outcomes are far better than what the previous State Government had. I have no issues with the current confirmed proposals going forward.

Although, I would have preferred more of the games venues in SEQ like rowing and equestrian, but at the end of the day that doesn’t worry me too much.

Holding Equestrian in Toowoomba really doesn’t bother me. It’s little different to the events being held on the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. With the Brisbane Showgrounds being used for the Athletes Village, that removed one of the better Brisbane venues capable of hosting that. Without that, you would really be left with the State Equestian Centre at Caboolture, and I don’t know if that would be large enough.

Continuing to hold the rowing up north I think is a bit of a missed opportunity though.
