They are talking about the close proximity of a Victoria Park Station and Exhibition, not Fortitude Valley.

I have a question about Victoria Park Stadium and CRR (Cross River Rail) planning regarding the Gabba’s CRR Station.

I feel that Victoria Park Stadium is going to need to have a train station because, as much as buses are great near the Victoria Park, Herston, and Kelvin Grove area, the buses, in my opinion, wouldn’t be able to handle the volume of foot traffic as efficiently as a train would. I would like all forms of transportation to complement each other (but as we know, there will always be issues related to the politics of buses and trains when it comes to planning). I feel that a train station is necessary, but I have no idea where they would put it. I don’t know if there is even enough time to build it, but if so, where would they even put it? My best bet would be a station near Ibis Island, near the pedestrian overpass.

Whatever they do I hope transportation and accessibility are taken into high regard as part of this new stadium, as it will have a legacy for transport and accessibility well beyond the game.

I have a question about the CRR Gabba station. Since the Gabba station was designed for stadium capacity as part of being the “station of the olympic stadium” will its size and design be under-utilised now that the Gabba redevelopment plans have fallen through??

Some key points on transport planning from this Brisbane Times article Brisbane 2032 Olympics: Documents raise security concerns over Exhibition Station’s proximity to athletes’ village and the Games Leadership Group minutes tabled in parliament (https://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/Work-of-the-Assembly/Tabled-Papers/docs/5826T0846/5826t846.pdf) :

  • a new station for Victoria Park has been ruled out, as site restrictions would not allow for the required accessibility and platform lengths.
  • Exhibition Station will be the primary station for the VPP [Victoria Park Precinct], along with Herston and Kelvin Grove busway stations.
  • Exhibition Station – about 700 to 800 metres from the planned stadium – would be the main rail hub for north-south movement, while the more distant Fortitude Valley Station would be better suited for east-west travel.
  • Exhibition Station will be a hub for sector 1 with trains to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast running through this station every 4 mins.
  • About 42 per cent of travel to Victoria Park was expected to be by rail during the Games, the leadership group was told – 32 per cent through Exhibition Station.
  • For post-Games events, that was expected to drop to 35 per cent – 25 per cent at Exhibition Station.
  • Exhibition Station will require changes to the platforms to allow for safe use of the station in Games and legacy event modes. Design will include pedestrian movement as well as rail and safety requirements.
  • Arup, which had been contracted to deliver the Victoria Park master plan, is expected to form a position on necessary changes to Exhibition Station by the “second half of 2026”.
  • pedestrian access being key to movement between the station and venues for the Games and legacy events. The 700-800m walk from the station to the stadium is less than that of the MCG.
  • Arup has proposed four concepts to enable movement of large volumes of people to venues whilst ensuring required separation that include graded separation using large boulevard-style bridges."
  • Security is paramount for Games time, and separation will be required between athletes/officials and the public," the minutes show.
  • Members agreed that the use of the Exhibition Station during Games time with the correct solutions in place will provide a better outcome than an alternative station.

Ah, so this is why CRR was delayed til 2029! :winking_face_with_tongue:

If the only attraction is a 10k capacity Brisbane Arena operating ~20 times a year, then yes it would likely be under-utilised for the other 340 days.

BTQ need to call out BS on the availability of space for a second station. There is clearly enough space near the current train washing yards and this would be yet another great legacy project for that area.

Time to speak to the media.

But is it worth the construction of a second station so close to Exhibition/Bowen Hills/Fortitude Valley for 2 weeks in 2032?

It’s not two weeks. It’s decades of a 67k seat stadium. The walk is ridiculous and nothing will change my mind on that fact. Exhibition station is not suitable for a stadium - it is set up for all day constant low flow not point in time high volume surges.

Brisbane Arena is a 15,000-17,000 seat venue and, as a direct replacement to the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, will take over BEC’s “70 to 100 ticketed events each year, averaging about 2 to 3 major shows per week during its peak touring seasons” (source - Google AI Overview).

For reference, BEC’s What’s On page right now features 16 events during the next 30 days (helped by 11 sessions of Disney on Ice over 4 days, and two nights of Carl Barron).

Can we prove without a shadow of a doubt that there is definitely space for a station, and obtain engineering reports that will disprove the conclusion that ARUP, a multinational engineering and professional services group, has arrived at?

Looking at a map and saying that it’ll fit really isn’t going to be enough to argue this point.

I think there is a good chance that pax on the east west sectors will transfer at Roma St and head to Exhibition rather than walk in from Fortitude Valley.

There will be people here more qualified to answer this question than me, but you have ask yourself how is there not space, when you think the Exhibition station footprint is not that big?

Also, if the Government have restrictions in place for what ARUP can put in the master plan, this is not a true independent report. And we all know every level of government love manipulation of reports to suit their agenda/budget.

I generally agree, and I think the percentages in the report generally seems to reflect this. That said, some pax might go up to the Valley for dinners/drinks after events. I suspect the Valley will be the major Olympics party precinct.

ARUP have been contracted by GIICA/Government - their report is not going to go against any stated position of the body they’ve been contracted by. If the Government stated that they didn’t want to knock down a newly upgraded Train Wash facility for example, that’s perfectly acceptable.

That being said, that’s not what is noted in the tabled paper - the paper stated that ARUP were engaged to look at transport options, including a new station, and it is implied that it was their position that an alternative station was not viable.

ARUP were engaged to look at transport options for the Victoria Park Precinct (VPP) including exploring an alternative station at VPP.

An alternative station is not viable as the site will not allow for required accessibility or platform lengths without significant additional land being available at the site.

How are the other 58% travelling then? That would mean 35,000 people or so after a sold out event, which is around 200 full metro buses, or 500-600 regular buses. Difficult to see how this works.

Might be time to start having event services have 9-car trains for Sector 1…

From the tabled paper:

Anticipated Games time transport modes include approx. 42% by rail (32% Exhibition Station), 39% by bus (18% Busway, 19% Transport Mall, 2% Local Buses), 17% taxi/rideshare and active travel.

Anticipated legacy event transport modes include approx. 35% by rail (25% Exhibition Station), 40% by bus (30% Bus Shuttles, 10% Busway Services), 15% taxi/rideshare and 8% active travel.

15% taxi/rideshare means about 10,000 people, or probably 5,000 cars or so. Where on earth are they going to go?

Yes, I agree. Is that possible before the olympics? Maybe just for Gold Coast and Redcliffe Peninsula.

9-car trains are a much easier fix than a new station, in the span of an hour instead of 4x 6-car trains you have the equivalent of 6x 6-car trains which is a much needed increase in potential passenger loads
