Brisbane Metro

You know, the funny thing is that Brisbane metro has no State Government funding AFAIK but it requires BCC to pay for construction works on the busway, a state government asset.

If you are going to play politics and force your project on my network then you can stump up all the $$$

The sign has both the Queensland Government and TMR logo on it at the bottom, so presumably they were informed…

Do any members have plans to ride first revenue services on the day?

I might go for a partial ride on my way into work - probably just between Mater Hill and KGS, or something like that.

When M1 starts, I’ll do the whole trip on day one!

Just got on G1601 and the inbound 111 desto has already been changed with the King George Square via line now reading:

ā€œvia City Hall - KGSā€

BCC Transport Politics is totally Out of Control.

The name changes are also approved by Translink. Also changing to City Hall station is no big deal. Reminds me of being a mini Sydney (Town Hall / City Hall).

To be fair, City Hall is probably a more identifiable location to visitors than a square is, especially when the CBD has a quite a number of squares all in close proximity (KGS, Anzac Square, Post Office Square, Reddacliffe Place and Queens Gardens).

Even if people weren’t familiar with either the building itself or its location, a major civic building like a City Hall would generally be located fairly centrally in a city’s CBD/downtown area - that would be my thinking at least.

As the Brisbane Metro rolls out permanently, it is joined by a refreshed bus network set to capitalise on a less busy city centre and boost access to the Metro services.

January 24, 2025 — 3.35pm

Brisbane City Council is bringing the NBN above ground – the public transport overhaul it has dubbed the ā€œNew Bus Networkā€, that is.

The updates come with the launch – or relaunch, depending who you ask – of the Brisbane Metro, with megabuses set to start on the M2 route, which takes over from the 66 service, from Tuesday.

Not a great start it seems

I really think the metro routes should go away with strict timetables and just go to headways to avoid this issue entirely. One delay on a HF route like this cascades and it’s nigh impossible to regain.

GTFS handles headways already, so Translink just needs to change the way they publish the route information.

Well, it depends…

If the delay is because this vehicle just happened to have started its run late, but the frequency has been maintained at your stop, meh.

If you left your stop on time but are now running however-many minutes late, you definitely notice the delay!

If this was a small number of routes then yes but when you choose to mix it in with a much larger number of bus routes then you can’t pretend that headway is all that matters.

Is this an intentional feature or design flaw that bus jams on the Victoria Bridge are still a thing in 2025?

Send more southside bus services along the Captain Cook Bridge, and create a bus-only lane along it.

Also, the bottleneck remains at Grey/Melbourne streets’ intersection with traffic. Why haven’t they blocked off access to traffic. No need for the scramble crossing, there are stairs and elevators at the Cultural Centre station.

This is an exasperation of an existing issue at the Cultural Centre tunnel portal. Hitting this bus jam during my AM peak journey usually occurs where the buses go beneath the BCEC, but this morning it started right back at the South Bank Busway Station platform (albeit I was a bit later than usual as I detoured to catch an M2).

This bus jam, for anyone who hasn’t experienced it, has been caused by the synchronisation (or lack thereof) of the lights at the portal and Grey Street. Outbound buses get a nice, long window to get across Grey Street then straight around and down into the tunnel. However, the need for West End Buses to still share this one outbound lane at the moment means they cross the inbound turn during this sequence too, meaning buses from the SEB can’t exit the tunnel during the same traffic light sequence (which I believe is the ultimate intent).

As a result, SEB inbound have their own window that isn’t isn’t synchronised with Grey Street and is only long enough to allow 2-3 buses out at a time - all that can fit in the space between that intersection and the Grey Street. This makes for a painful inbound trip that will likely last until Cultural Centre 3 is up and running, and West End Buses can be segregated.

I’m only suggesting it for the Metro routes. Other routes should still run on a schedule and of course delays with these routes hurt more.

Ride quality is normal for a bus (and I’m in the trailer section) except of course there’s no engine vibration!

Update: ride quality not so good through Queen St Mall and on the bridge lol!

Update 2: on reflection, I’d avoid the back of the bus if you need good ride quality. Haven’t tested the middle yet.

I was on the back of the metro bus during initial testing on the 169 route and it was bumpy as on the busway too.

They were meant to address the suspension issues as well as the height of the grabs bars above doorways before relaunching. They were also going to upgrade the speaker audio systems for clarity.

Overall it’s not mass transit lol with delays outbound on the Vic Bridge as well as queuing inbound from Southbank Station Lol :joy:

What also surprised me was the urgency to restart the Bne Metro when the infrastructure is not yet finished as well as the Uni being on holidays until the end of Feb.

Is there a way from the Real-time data feed to start analyzing the on-timeliness/trip duration of this ā€œmass transitā€
