Building Over ["artifically" sinking] the INNER Ipswich Line

Concept

Begin the multi-year process of building over the Ipswich rail line, from around upper Milton Road to Toowong and likely on-to Indooroopilly.

  1. These regions are higher-density and destined for A LOT more apartments ie people, well located along a major rail corridor.

  2. Govt will receive money from developers to build over/modernise the existing unused air-space.

  3. Even Qld has tinkered with this at Toowong (on the corridor) and Fortitude Valley as examples. Sydney particularly has done a lot of this stuff during its own growth journey.

  4. It will allow for the modernisation/upgrading of desired destination living regions, in the inner ring of Brisbane!

  5. Frankly, with modern engineering, it’s basically a “low-hanging-fruit opportunity”, for revenue for the state, apartments [and other structures] for in demand housing and inner-urban lifestyle!

And yes, you can put some shinny new bus-stop signs in, somewhere, if you’re already scared buses might not be the main drawcard [for a change]!

This might require raising the line around Taringa, where it’s sunk below the level of surrounding land.

Is this what Taringa would look like?

I think we should just sell off all the air rights above each major inner city station. Northgate, Bowen Hills, Indro, Boggo Road, Roma Street etc

Gov would make a lot of money out of this too.

When was the last time that anything has been built over a railway line?

There is a reason why it didn’t happen at Milton, or South Bank, or Roma Street.

Can we not? Central already makes me feel like a rosseterie chicken in the oven whenever I have to wait for longer than 5 minutes

Ok but at least doing it to Bowen Hills would at least make sense. The current area in and around Bowen Hills is an absolute shithole. Then again I could also use those words for a lot of parts of Brisbane, so please pardon my language.

Agreed. There’s a reason property developers will choose almost any other option than building over a railway station/line.

Beyond money and effort, what prevents the government implementing air conditioning at Central? I imagine it requires platform screen doors to keep the cool air in, and therefore a standardisation of rail cars that we may not yet have implemented?

Probably the fact that the station is not fully enclosed, having a completely open end.
