I am not in favour of cutting speed limits further. 40 kph is fine and we also have 20 and 10 kph for laneways and low speed areas such as around Roma Street Parklands Burnett Lane. Adding more speed limits just complicates things and adds more adminstrative burden and costs of implementation and management. It would also slow down commuter buses which already have a slow average speed overall.
So overall it is about restricting freedom
I’m very much in favour of reducing speed limits on narrow, residential streets (think no dividing line, and barely enough room for two vehicles to pass) to 40 or even 30 km/h. The chance if survival for a pedestrian in a collision with a vehicle is 10% at 50, but 90% at 30 km/h. That’s a massive increase!
Buses generally shouldn’t be using these kinds of streets anyway, and if they are, their average speeds are already likely to be quite low simply due to street design. Buses having to use narrow back streets is and indicating of poor urban design.
I would also be in favour of reducing speed limits on main urban roads through heavily congested areas to 50 km/h, as it would be unlikely to make much difference to overall trip times anyway. I’m thinking of streets like Turbot St and Ann St in the CBD, Wickham St through the Valley, Breakfast Creek Rd, Milton Rd, Coronation Drive, Lytton Rd through East Brisbane, Ipswich Rd as far as Moorooka, etc.
Slowing the speed at which we drive has nothing to do with “freedom”. Accessibility and mobility is ALL about freedom.
Slowing speeds has actually been shown to decrease travel times in specific scenarios.
Personally I would like to see residential streets be at most 40 km/h. Main roads with residential properties facing the road or high pedestrian usage should be no more than 50km/h. Other main roads can be 60km/h.
We have to move away from the roads in our residential area’s being seen as the most important mode of travel and prioritised. No one wants to walk to the shops when you have people screaming past you at 60+ km/h.
I have no problem with reducing speeds to 40 kph where needed, but I don’t agree with introducing another speed limit such as 30 kph for no reason what so ever just to appease a sub group in society.
Plus residents can go to their local council to have their local street assessed for traffic calming measures to reduce speed as well, if it’s a real concern.
Another thing is that these calls for new speed limits are just reposted from the net. Nothing is peered reviewed or based on facts, science, or real life data. You have to be careful what crap (Currency, Reliability, Authority, Purpose) is on the net.
No reason?
There is no reason when we have 40, and 20. If you are particularly worried about a particular street it’s best to join with your local community and advocate for 50 or 40, as well as traffic calming if needed.
Rapid Transit such as BUZ routes are generally placed into main and arterial roads precisely because they are fast.
It’s not a simple blanket thing.
