Imagine 15 min all day frequency on the Gold Coast train line!!
Thanks. Drive - ABC listen
There really needs to be 5 tracks (one for SG/freight) between Salisbury and the CRR portal, and four south of there. I believe the original CRR plan was for five tracks north of Yeerongpilly (two in the tunnel, and three surface), but apparently sale of land by the Newman Government, upon which apartments were built, forced the tunnel portals further north.
They probably shouldâve been moved south instead, but the price wouldâve increased substantially.
Woodridge Station looks much more elevated/open underneath station. Great opportunity for public places/plaza around station/shops!
7 News also reported that they have the guy from the Sydney Metro project managing and helping deliver this one.
If the blue team manages to deliver this on the same level as public transport infra projects in NSW we should be in for one hell of a treat.
The minister for transport was quoted in saying that there will be up to 12 express trains per hour instead of the 6 they have now. It was unclear if this would be bi directional peak, or one way peak or just Olympic mode only (7 News, 2025).
I do believe that once everything gets settled some Beenleigh stoppers (at least one every 30 minutes) should be extended to Varsity Lakes or at least Helensvale with the addition of a third platform.
That way youâll get an even 15 minute service on all Gold Coast stations.
The audio is up!! Drive - ABC listen
Starts around 8 min 30 seconds. Good job Alex!!
I donât know if there is space for a third platform at Helensvale between it and the Light Rail Station. Also, I donât know if Gold Coast residents would go for what would effectively be an all stations Gold Coast service - it would be a much longer service than they are accustomed to.
Thereâs definitely space for a third platform. The LR was designed with this in mind. The lift to the light rail might need to be relocated, though.
You might even note that the light rail platforms at Helensvale are numbered 4 & 5, in anticipation of this.
Thereâs a potential future where what are presently the Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines become the Kuraby, Helensvale and Coolangatta lines. (Plus the Flagstone-Beaudesert line.)
In this situation I guess Helensvale P3 would take all the southbound Coolangatta trains, with P2 becoming a terminating platform. Although that probably wouldnât support any better than 4-6 tph due to the single platform terminus.
Featuring one very cheeky cockatiel, tooâŚ
Obviously wanting its 15 seconds of fameâŚ
Btw, as someone who used to work in radio (a long time ago at least), you didnât sound nervous at all.
I reckon that would be a great scenario - trains every 10 minutes for each of those three lines during peak would provide 18 trains per hour into the CRR tunnel, while still giving a good frequency. Even every 12 minutes would provide adequate frequency during peak I think and still be 15 trains per hour overall. Off-peak could be every 15 minutes which would be 12 trains per hour in the tunnel.
The main challenge would be mixing express with all stations services north of Helensvale. Would that be doable?
My head canon for the CRR stopping patterns goes like this:
- Gold Coast (Airport/Varsity Lakes) to Sunshine Coast (Birtinya/Maroochydore), express
- Caboolture to Beaudesert, limited express
- Redcliffe Peninsula to Beenleigh and Helensvale, local all stations.
Pairing one would run express from Beenleigh to Boggo Road, then Eagle Junction to Caboolture.
Pairing two would also be express from Salisbury to Boggo, then Eagle Junction to Petrie.
Pairing three would do all stations with a minimal express section between Eagle Junction to Northgate as to keep pace with the former patterns.
I would still argue for the GC express pattern to continue to include stops at Loganlea (major, expanding public hospital location - with a private hospital planned) and Altandi (busway connections via Mains Road corridor).
My head canon stopping patterns:
- Varsity Lakes/OOL to Birtinya/Maroochydore/Noosa (via CRR and North Coast Line)
- Express from Beenleigh to Boggo Road, stopping at Altandi and Loganlea (and Yeerongpilly off/counter-peak)
- Express from Bowen Hills to Petrie, stopping at Eagle Junction and
Northgate (and Carseldine off/counter-peak) - Frequency: 7.5min peak, 15min off/counter-peak
- Beenleigh to Kippa-Ring (via CRR and North Coast Line)
- Express from Bowen Hills to Northgate, stopping at Eagle Junction
- Frequency: 7.5min peak, 15min off/counter-peak
- Varsity Lakes/OOL to Beenleigh
- Stops all stations
- Frequency: 15min off/counter-peak only (7.5min Beenleigh-to-Varsity Lakes/OOL all day)
- Beerwah to Birtiniya/Maroochydore/Noosa
- Stops all stations
- Frequency: 15min off/counter-peak only (7.5min Beerwah-to-Birinya/Maroochydore/Noosa all day)
I have no idea what think of regarding the Beaudesert line. All I can think of is that it should go via Merivale Bridge.
Well by building CRR, it leaves spare capacity on the Merivale Bridge. It allows the option in the future for some services to go via South Brisbane.
