Have you heard of BCT (bus congested transport)? Go Goldie!!
Cost escalation viewed in and of itself is a bit meaningless too. The benefits of doing this are also subject to escalation given that affects more or less everything.
Often the largest benefits for PT projects are in-vehicle and platform waiting time savings. You might have avoided carbon emissions or accident reductions too.
These benefits are unlikely to increase proportionately as the costs of labour and materials escalate. As the cost increases, the BCR and NPV, key measures of project viability, can dip below 1 or become zero or negative.
This type of âdramaticâ decision-making, reflects again the poor approach to public transit planning, construction and operation in SEQ. Further evidence, of the need for a dedicated SEQ-wide Transit AuthorityâŚ.long-overdue.
Whilst Iâve travelled on the GC Tram a few times, Iâm NO expert and the only comment Iâd make is, IF it is ever taken further, it needs to be as a dedicated service ie from the end of stage 3 onward, NOT a continuation of a tram already running stages 1, 2 and 3. The run times/infrastructure length are getting fairly lllooonnnggggâŚ..
I think if the GCLR (once stage 4 is complete) was to be split for any reason, it would make more sense to have the segments as Helensvale to Broadbeach South, and then Broadbeach South to Coolangatta, as this would give fairly similar route-km for each segment.
âOpen Commentâ to Hon David Crisafulli, Premier of Queensland
Mr Premier,
In 2024, the Gold Coast âG Tramâ system carried (APPROX) 14 million people, across EVERY day of the year, helping drive the MASSIVE economy/tourist experience of the Gold Coast, an âIconâ Australian destination.
In 2024, Suncorp Stadium accommodated (APPROX) 1.4 million people, across 52 event days, helping drive the positive economic impact, of the event sector, in Brisbane.
In what âalternate universeâ, does Suncorp Stadium actually warrant further state government investment, but the âG Tramâ does not?
Iâm sure many Queenslanderâs would welcome a better understanding of your âreasoningâ?
Thank you

Question on Notice re Gold Coast Light Rail patronage.
Wow. This is as deliberately unhelpful as the Transport Minister can be because it is the Opposition leader asking the questionâŚ
(b) The number of users transferring from a GCLR service to a bus service at Broadbeach South station for the last three financial years (2022â23 to 2024â25) cannot be accurately reported as users with a paper ticket who transfer are not identified by the ticketing system
Iâm sure DTMR would have prepared a response based on the data available with the caveat about paper tickets. Ministerâs office then probably used that as excuse to answer with nothing.
Paper tickets are a tiny part of the picture now. And is the Minister really saying they donât ever look at what transfers happen anywhere because they canât capture 100% of them?
We donât need an accurate report. An estimate will be sufficient.
If we know the relative % of trips on GoCard and on Paper Tickets, then we can estimate the transfers. The number of Paper Tickets sold is probably negligible.
Does anyone know the number of Paper Tickets sold in 12 months versus the total number of trips?
Gold Coast light rail Stage 3: First look at Broadbeach to Burleigh extensionâs green transformation
The first trams will begin test runs on the light rail extension in November as the project reaches another major milestone which will change how people see the route.
this will make the libs look very stupid when construction could just flow from stage 3 to 4 and instead everyone involved will have to move to other projects while people get stuck in cars for years.
Itâs an incredibly shortsighted decision that is unfortunately pretty on-brand for how we do things in Queensland
First tram on tracks marks major milestone for Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3
- First tram travels on Gold Coast Light Rail Stage 3 tracks as testing gets underway between Broadbeach and Miami North stations.
- A safety campaign has also been launched to remind the community how to stay safe around trams, tracks, and overhead wires.
- Finishing works are also continuing along the new section of tracks between Broadbeach and Miami.
⌠Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate called it an historic time for the cityâs public transport network.
âI have consistently said this latest 6.7-kilometre section will prove the most popular as residents and visitors embrace light rail transport,â Mayor Tate said.
âThe uplift in patronage will surpass all expectations and I canât wait to see the benefits this project will bring to locals and tourists alike.â âŚ
^ At last, a LNP media statement free from political hyperbole! ![]()
The Minister must be on leave, statement by Acting Minister for Transport and Main Roads
The Honourable Sam OâConnor. Reading the statement you would think they would be proponents for stage 4, alas they are not.
Tram No. 7 has made history as the first to venture south of Broadbeach in a midnight test run that signals the countdown to Gold Coastâs $1.2bn rail extension to Burleigh launching.
^ Sam is and always has been in favour, but is not running the show.
Slightly off topic, but how good is this photo of Tom Tate from the GC Bulletin article, showing what he would look like with a blonde skullet! ![]()
