QR Facebook comment: Punter 'Car drove through the sound barrier and down onto the up sub between Wooloowin and Albion. ’

Appears to be approx 200m south of Wooloowin with the car sitting on the easternmost track.

Car looks to have been pulling out of Lisson Grove has gone through the noise barrier. That’s gonna be a fun one to get out of there.

Delays increasing now as peak starts, affecting all lines :frowning:

Back to normal running now, with residual delays of course.

I found it interesting that recovery crew were permitted to enter the live rail corridor.

Yet another bridge strike (Yeronga) earlier today. Usual disruptions, it doesn’t seem to get much better.

Luckily the fares are only 50c, otherwise they may have had to organise quite a lot of fare free days as compensation.

There were 105 bridge strikes in financial year 24/25 :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
First 3 months of financial year 25/26, 28 bridge strikes. So still averaging ~ bit over 9 per month. Hard to run a railway reliably with this level of mayhem.

Is this a new thing? My other half and I went past on seperate trains and both wondered that.

We were expecting a full closure until the car was removed because I thought they’d have to de-energise the OHLE if operating in the corridor. Imagine our surprise as our trains overtook the machinery while it was carrying the car down the track…

They could have de-energised the two tracks that were affected.

That would have been very surprising! I was under the impression that with todays OHS policies accessing a live rail corridor was not permitted. Hence my comment. Maybe it has been relaxed for special circumstances.

You often see track walks occuring on the opposite tracks when services are moved to a single track pair on the weekend.

Why are there so many bridge strikes? Are drivers that unaware of the heights of their vehicles?

It is a question which troubles many rail operators! Why are there so many bridge strikes?

I think you can classify bridge strikes into two broad categories:

  1. Professional truck drivers who simply do not understand the height of their vehicles and particularly loads. It is often something on the back of truck that whacks the beam/bridge.

  2. Casual van hire and the like. A punter hires a removal van and then is oblivious to the fact that the van has a height.

QR puts a lot of work into trying to reduce bridge strikes, with not much gain.
eg. Queensland experiencing a truckload of bridge strikes (TMR statement)

Did the driver hit the FARE EVADE button?

I took the advantage of the opportunity this evening and tried Exhibition Station for the first time with the track works shuttle service.

Decided to bus up via RBWH to walk in which was suprisingly complicated and I ended up missing the train I was hoping to get even after having allowed extra time for exploring.

After painfully surviving the 3 segment ped crossing, I tried to enter the station via the O’Connell Tce access road only to find the area fenced off.

I was hopeful of a detour but the signs seemed to just point to the carpark of which the far side also seemed blocked.

Expecting to have to do the full block to Gregory Tce, I was pleasantly suprised to see wayfinding at the Herston Rd/Bown Bridge Rd intersection (Didn’t get a photo)

Secondary wayfinding:

The path from the bikeway junction to the station has had a bit of attention to it but as a long narrow path doesn’t give off the greatest vibes.

The other side of the station wasn’t much better for access.

Back to the station. None of the PIDs were showing train trip information, either the time, general QR ads or one showing a notice about the shuttles (Didn’t get a photo). The station was very heavily staffed with at least 6 staff, probably closer to 10, between the two levels.

IMU 124 at Roma St after 17:50 trip (run J9W1):

PIDs were very functional for the shuttle still showing the trip as due in 1 minute, 10 minutes after it had departed.

To achive the 4 minute turnarounds they were doing 2 guards and 2 drivers with one pair doing each direction and riding back the other way. Spoke to one of the guards at Roma St and had done 2 trips (I assume that means 1 return - i.e. 17:40 start but could be 17:20) and will go until the service ends at midnight).

Loads on the services I saw were very light with at most a handful on.

It was very weird catching an NGR (732 I think it was) on the Gympie North service yesterday.
