“We are getting on with the job, working with the Toowoomba Regional Council to plan and deliver public transport improvements that meet the needs of the community.

Good to see. Toowoomba Regional Council relatively recently decided to co-fund bus operational costs to induce Translink funding.

It seems to have worked!

Toowoomba Council’s new Public Transport levy, mapped for the whole region, is copping a mixed reaction.

Some locals claim they’re paying ‘too much’ for a service they’re yet to benefit from.

Minister for Transport backs TRC’s new Public Transport Levy

“It comes as no surprise to me that the new levy has received the backing of the Queensland State Government. That gives me great confidence we can meet the objectives of the levy’s introduction. This includes partnering with the State to deliver key elements of the TRC Sustainable Transport Strategy 2023 which simply would not be able to be delivered in a business-as-usual approach.

“Importantly, the Public Transport Levy comes at no net increase to ratepayers as it replaces the previous Park and Open Space and Biosecurity and Bushland Conversation levies, both of which have funds set aside to be used for the purposes of their previous collection.

Isn’t public transport a matter for the Queensland State Government?

Yes it is. However, Council’s advocacy efforts to the Queensland State Government for improved public transport services for the Toowoomba region over many years has resulted in feedback from the State that, without matched funds from Council, improved services simply won’t be delivered. Council can now advocate to the State Government, with specific funds set aside, to improve services for the Toowoomba region.

Public transport improvements in Toowoomba should come alongside basic creature comforts like real-time tracking and contactless payment support.

Wild that places like Innisfail (that as far as I know only have one or two buses in service) have RT data before Toowoomba, Townsville or even services from Maleny.
