Cannon Hill Station Relocation and 2x Level Crossing Removals
Part of BTQ’s vision is to remove level crossings. From time to time a station may have to move because it might be built right up against the road where the train needs to go over or under the road.
A Cannon Hill station relocation would bring together a number of considerations that could be dealt with and solved together:
- A new TOD located on vacant land adjacent to Creek Road
- Creek Road is already grade separated
- The desire for QR stations to have straight platforms
- The desire for stations to be located near main roads so that they can ‘be on the way’ for bus connections
- Better access and location to Cannon Hill Shopping Centre
- Removal of two level crossings - Barrack Road and Queensport Road
- The ability to close the Queensport Road level crossing through closing of the intersection with the rail line, which would avoid having to spend money on an road over rail overpass or rail under road trench (and subsequent station rebuilding).
- Potential siding for terminating trains to turn back while operating 15 min frequency.
The existing Cannon Hill and Murrarie stations would be combined into a new station under this concept.
A concept image for discussion has been provided below.
Similar to Melbourne’s Union station project. Definitely needed here.
I think that would also bring into the discussion a potential justification for a station near Rossiter Street?
I really like this idea, as it gets the Cannon Hill Plaza and the Cleveland Line closer to one another
Does look like we would need better pedestrian infrastructure nearby the station - mainly sidewalks along creek road, a better connection through creek road (perhaps one or two underpasses parallel to the railway?)
Challenge here is they just upgraded the station so unlikely to be moved anytime soon.
Alas, it’s a sunk cost. Both Murrarie and Cannon Hill are adjacent to level crossings so whether you choose road over rail or rail over road as the separation approach, the existing stations won’t have the space to stay. They will need to be rebuilt.
Yes, this will be required. Potentially better bike access to and from the new station.
Any thoughts on what the land from the old Cannon Hill station footprint could be used for? If it’s large enough for some sort of development, this could potentially offset the project cost. But critically, it would depend on the size.
Update: It does look from maps like at least some of the car park footprint for both the old stations could be sold to offset the project cost.
