Government Statement: MEDIA STATEMENT: New rail facility to support hundreds of jobs on the Gold Coast
Is this not already released? What has changed?
The current LNP Government needed the opportunity to criticise the former ALP Government. It was an entirely political MR.
Political it well is, but at least the future of the QTMP seems secure. That’s the message for me.
The builder of the maintenance facility was announced, that’s the main, non-political takeaway from the press release.
Nomad (who already do some backend work for QR when it comes to streaming onboard CCTV to security control room) have won a tender to provide onboard wifi for the QTMP trains. Will be interesting to see whether we’ll get a better data limit than the almost unusable system currently in use on newer SMU/IMU and NGR sets.
Government MEDIA STATEMENT: High-tech mock-up gives Queenslanders first look at new trains
^ onsite visit by BTQ?
Not sure if every car will the same, but the seating capacity looks far lower in the car they showed due to it having 2 seats on one side and only 1 seat on the other!
I’m pretty sure a row of seats have been sacrificed to allow for more standing space in the aisle, so the trains can has more passenger capacity overall.
Edit: The aisle may be wide enough for wheelchair users to pass through the aisle as well.
The section of the carriage shown looks like it is the PWD accessible area with an extra large pathway. I suggest that the second carriage in the mockup will have the regular 2x2 seating arrangement.
I just hope the new trains get USB-C power sockets installed for fast charging of devices like laptops, tablets and whatnot. It would be a big oversight to just put basic USB-A ports.
And I genuinely want to see those internal screens to show actually useful information, like connecting services with data in real time, journey times (like on the G:link trams) and stuff like that.
I believe this is just for the accessible carriages (which will be cars 2 and 5 if the design copies the NGR). The rest should have the standard 2-2 seating.
I can’t recall which, but one of the project pages or media releases in relation to the QTMP suggests each seat will have its own USB-C outlet, based off the first low fidelity render they will be located underneath and below the two seats.
If anyone from BTQ does have a chance to visit this mock up please take as many photos as you can, would be very interested to see whether they’ve been able to improve the seat padding compared to the NGRs too.
To be fair I’ve never taken too much of an issue with the NGR seats. They’re not the best but they do the job on VL services. It’s when you go to Nambour that things get a bit dicey.
Another big miss I’m seeing with the mockup is once again a lack of luggage space. That is one major issue the NGRs have on Brisbane Airport services.
DTMR posted a video on YouTube a little while ago showing the members from the disability sector interacting with the original Lo-Fi mock up, which might be of interest in this discussion. One interesting point that is brought up by the independent advocate for people with invisible disabilities, with regards to the single seats on the side I believe (or at least the video implies), is that these small, individual spaces are beneficial to people suffering from social anxiety.
One thing I do like from the mockup is that we’re getting gap fillers at the doors, which is a staple of Stadler trains in Europe.
So so good to see that brought here.
USB C is included.
I think the single seating configuration is a good idea.
2027 on the tracks? They must be getting some made in Korea for that to happen.
