As a local who lives not far from this area and frequents it very much, this level crossing is really bad. And the alternative underpass always gets flooded after every storm.
The South Pine Road Level crossing is a massive congestion magnet and also has to handle trucks coming in and out of the Industrial area of Brendale. Here is my proposal to finally eliminate this crossing.
Under my redesign, show in yellow is both existing roads (which would remain open) and new road alignments including the bridge. Meanwhile Roads shown in red would be closed. This will include the Level Crossing and the underpass (as it would be built over with a new overpass). Highlighted in blue is land that could be set aside for future TOD, subject to both planning approval and flood overlays (I believe part of this area does flood so mitigation works would need to take place.
Pros:
- A seriously Dangerous Level Crossing is removed
- Significant improvements to traffic flow and local congestion
- Overall road and rail Safety
- Risk mitigation through Grade Separation
- Also eases congestion off Kremzow Road Overpass (the only other rail overpass in the area)
- New Infrastructure improvements around the area, benefits the local community.
Cons:
- Construction works will be extremely disruptive and may include partial road closures at times
- Congestion will significantly worsen temporarily during construction works
- Road Detours, particularly access to station parking will need to be implemented
- The Red Rooster will unfortunately have to close and will be missed
