Is this evidence we should be looking at rail-based rather than rubber-tyred forms of public transport where possible?
Also, given the relatively long average commute distances in Australia (a quick Google search suggests 15.6 km vs 5.03 km in Germany), surely particle emissions from tyres would be higher here.
It’s definitely a big reason to prefer rail for line haul. Probably the biggest one is that at a certain corridor capacity, you want bigger vehicles rather than more frequent buses, all else being equal.
(Obviously you can’t build rail on every route - cost/demand, road space, hilliness…)
