M1 to be widened North of the DāAguilar Highway in addition to a new parallel service road (7News, 2025).
But public transport has to pay its way!!
Quite an extreme highway upgrade.
Dear god. I can only imagine how many billions of dollars thatās going to cost.
10 lanes for road traffic and yet only 2 rail tracks between Petrie and Caboolture which are at almost 100% utilisation in peak times. Wonder what the cost comparison would be to do a big capacity upgrade to the rail network (similar to LGCFR).
This neeeds to be called out as the absolutely wrong thing to do. This is the crux of why public tranbsport is treated as a back water issue.
āThe former Labor Government mismanaged the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project so badly the estimated cost blew out from $2.6 billion to $5.7 billion ā and not a single track was laid,ā said Mickelberg in his media statement.
I donāt really think that $5.7bil is really that much money compared to what they would spend on such motorway widening project. Kinda funny when he was on edge for a much-needed rail project for costing up to $5.7bil while there is no such angst for spending around 3 times as much on motorway widening projects.
Is it a coincidence that every current rail project just happens to be either delayed, or has cost overruns that seem to come out of nowhere?
All these projects have one thing in common - they are not motorways!
When the widened the Gold Coast Motorway why didnāt they also build the heavy rail extension to the GC Airport at the same time?
That would have been good.
Queensland Parliament E-petition: Relieve congestion on major roads in our cities
https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/projects/programs/gateway-motorway-and-bruce-highway-upgrades
This proposal has been out for quite a while. But has anyone (particularly Northsiders) asked for this?
I would not. The Gateway Motorway from Bracken Ridge to Banyo already endured 3-5 years of road widening until 2019. I would not bear with more of this.
Ill tell ya one key change i want see happen.
The cyclist be able to cross the pine rivers at gateway from BR to murrumba saving heaps of time.
As much as it is appreciated for a bikeway to be built over the Pine, it is pretty much an excuse for TMR to go āLook guys, we built a bikeway. We are seriously committed to improving our active transport by building an advanced bikeway (a long slab of concrete with paint on it) as part of a huge motorway widening project. Beats me why we canāt build an independent bikeway that actually links people to where they want to go without having them right next to an 8 lane clogged motorway that emits fumes for cyclists to inhale (wink wink).ā
M1 southbound lanes are open south to Tugun. This should improve the reliability of the 760 which is good.
The Bruce Highway is currently undergoing a widening project from Dohles Rock Rd to Anzac Ave.
It was around 2023 (2 years ago) this project was proposed, and now construction commenced. Why are road āupgradeā projects so quick to get the green light, while rail and PT projects take forever to even get started?
Politically easier. A large amount of the general public view road upgrades as a no-brainer, something that benefits everyone. Whereas PT upgrades are seen as only benefiting a small subset of the population (often āthe poorsā, or just people in a different area). This view isnāt accurate but I find thatās the default position in Australia in most places it seems
A clear example of textbook car-brain that has slowly been induced among the majority of the Brisbane population by politics of the late 20th century. It has sadly come to the point that traffic-inducing road projects are welcomed by the general public, and that much needed PT projects are mostly watered down or outright cancelled thanks to NIMBYs.
Seems like they cheaped out on materials when construction the now-defective bridge to ensure that the new Coomera connector gets completed asap.
Talk about the āsafety regulations and testingā required for CRR that would delay the project by a ridiculous amount while they would do anything that can to make sure road projects donāt experience such delays even at a compromise of safety and build quality.
