  • SEQ’s population will increase by almost 2.2 million to around 6 million by 2046, new figures show.
  • SEQ’s population is currently around 3.8 million.

Queensland’s population is growing, 6 million people will call South East Queensland home by 2046 - that’s 2.2 million more South East Queenslanders.

Notes on Input Assumptions

  1. Figures are estimates for daily weekday trips.
Total trip pie (all modes) is estimated on each resident generating 3.3 trips per weekday.
  2. PT trips are based on a PT=25% level. This level is likely to vary across LGAs, and be much lower for LGAs further away from Brisbane. One can substitute lower or higher values here.
  3. Estimated car trips are simply Total Trip Pie minus PT trips.
  4. Roads like the Gateway motorway carry about 100,000 trips per day

I think we actually have a lot of transport infrastructure available to take the increased population already, we just use it incredibly poorly. There’s no real Brisbane equivalent of Burwood in Sydney or Box Hill in Melbourne where there’s real high density in the suburbs. At best we have a couple of 9-10 storey apartment blocks in Chermside and near Garden City.

I think Darra should be the site of high density development. Junction of two railway lines, land value relatively low by Brisbane standards, if planned well it could house a lot of people.

I’m optimistic that Mirvac will use the Toombul site for high density mixed residential commercial (akin to Hamilton).
