Shade & shelter on the network

Starting a new thread for this, but we’re really lacking any sort of sun/weather protection for large parts of our network. Despite Queensland having the highest skin cancer rates in Australia, which itself has the highest skin cancer rates in the world, and despite the regular intense weather (how many times has it hailed in the past month?), many bus stops are just a pole with a sign (see example below).

I think BTQ should be advocating for a major expansion in shelter at public transport stops, possibly alongside eInk installation & other amenities, focusing on stops like the above which don’t have shade trees but ideally aiming to have the vast majority of stops covered.

Edit: I forgot this was already in the policy platform, whoops!

It’s worth also saying that reviewing the bus network to have fewer routes but running at higher frequencies makes investing in better stops more feasible and more beneficial.

The Mt Thompson Rd bus stop in Holland Park (a small park n’ ride) features a large shade shelter that boasts an impressive shade awning. And an e-ink!:shushing_face:

I’m not going to lie, but Bowen Hills, Albion and Woolloowin are shockers when it comes to providing sufficient shade - and the fact that they’re all inner-city stations isn’t a good look

Bowen Hills is my local and it’s shocking. In the morning peak (when people tend to use it!) there’s no shade at all on platforms 3/4, because the sun comes in at such an angle that it goes under the tiny shade structures. Really needs an upgrade

Unappealing as the example in the OP post is, at least it’s accessible by a footpath (even a reasonably wide one).

This bus stop is on Blunder Road (on the 100 bus route). To reach it you need to cross a 4 lane 70 km/h road.

A few hundred metres south is another bus stop that is accessible by footpath. However, the adjacent intersection is missing a pedestrian crossing, forcing you to make 3 very long (and usually very hot) crossings to reach it from the shops on the other side of Blunder Road.

Maybe they could consider some standing bus shelters at some stops where there is minimal room. The one on Bowen Bridge Road outside the museum should be a standing one instead of what they have now as it really restricts the footpath space.

Browns Plains isn’t exactly known as a ‘leafy’ suburb, instead being known by most southsiders by its car-centric and blisteringly hot landscape. But its bus interchange does succeed in providing ‘adequate shade.’

Just don’t expect both sides of the bus station to be completely shaded at any given time.

Indooroopilly Station inbound is not much better in the afternoon either.

It’s basically only in the afternoon during the summer months but the other times of the year it’s not so bad.

Cultural centre seems to be a bit better now since higher buildings are going up close by.

On a positive note both Aspley and Cannon Hill both have air-conditioned waiting areas.

That looks like an old tram stop to me. They’re always nice when they’ve survived.

Edit: The issue with that stop is where do you get off the bus in the afternoon when you’re heading home. I can’t see a matching stop on the other side of the road.

Its twinned outbound stop is on the other side of Nursery Rd.
