Smart Ticketing

Looks Good, Something they can easily replicate on the App too.

Are the screenshots from a beta site?

It seems to appear at random when visiting https://ticketingassistant.translink.com.au

It’s not fully working as of now yet.

I wonder when Translink will publish the regional roll out timeline for smart ticketing?

Spotted a couple days ago in Tugun. Banks doing the work translink hasn’t bothered to do.

Not really a Translink-related thing - express mode is a banking app and user device setting, and therefore probably not something Translink themselves should be promoting directly.

Not long after Smart Ticketing was rolled out, I know a Commbank App update mentioned something about it - whether it was just promoting it or supporting/activating it locally I can’t remember, but the timing was very specific. I assume the same is true of the Suncorp Bank advertising here.

No it isn’t, mainly because it’s an equipment feature. Not all ticketing system providers have the ability available right out of the box (NEC with MyWay+ doesn’t, for example).

Transport for NSW promotes it all the time as it allows for faster boarding times, so why shouldn’t translink?

And remember: Opal is a Cubic thing, so…

I use transit mode with Google Wallet as well. No need to unlock.

In regards to marketing isn’t Translink/Cubic still in the trial phase, despite rolling it out to every mode in SE Qld?

On a side note - Google Maps markets pay by your phone with GPay when planning a journey in Adl or Syd via the Google maps mobile journey planner.

It doesn’t appear on planned journeys in Qld as yet in Google Maps. It’s likely to be in the next phase of the rollout, I reckon.

Not sure if everyone started seeing it at the same time but I’ve noticed google maps lately has started showing journey price within SEQ. Obviously always the same price with 50c fares, but that definitely wasn’t a thing when the fare zones were in place, at least not on my devices!

Yeah saw that too, flat rate 50c throughout. Except on the Airport line but I haven’t done a journey plan for that one.

It looks like it’s just coming up for bus journeys at the moment on Google Maps

Maybe it’s just me being lucky but I’ve definitely been noticing readers being a lot faster at accepting Apple devices on Express Mode, getting to go card levels of speed.

Maybe translink and Cubic are still tweaking things behind curtains?

It’s been working well with transit mode on Android too.

I have definitely noticed an improvement on iOS. I actually avoided using transit mode for a bit because it always took a few seconds, I would say it’s no slower than the wallet app now.

Quite a lot of tech locked away!

Moved from - Used GoCard and reader also read smart phone

Some people can experience card clash and debiting from other cards and phones if you have your phone or wallet in your pocket level/close to a reader while entering or alighting from a vehicle.

Card clash occurs when you present multiple payment cards or devices to the validator at once, causing it to read multiple cards instead of the one you intended to use. This can lead to incorrect fares being charged or payments being declined. To avoid card clash, always present only one payment method (either a physical card, or a smart device) when tapping on and off public transport.

Here’s a more detailed explanation:

What is card clash?

When you have multiple contactless payment methods (like a physical card and the same card on your phone) in close proximity to the validator, it can sometimes read multiple cards simultaneously.

Why is it a problem?

This can lead to the system charging you multiple fares, or it might not be able to determine the correct fare, potentially resulting in a default fare or a declined payment.

How to avoid it?

Present only one card or device: When tapping on and off, make sure to only hold up the card or device you intend to use, removing it from your wallet or purse if necessary.
Separate payment methods:If you need to pay for multiple people, use different payment methods (e.g., your physical card for yourself and your phone for your child).
Be aware of your wallet/phone case: Wallets and phone cases can sometimes hold multiple cards, so be mindful of what’s near the validator when tapping.

What to do if it happens?

If you suspect a card clash, you can use the Translink Ticketing Assistant to request a fare adjustment or refund.

Thanks

I have also had a similar incident - in my case, I believe that the Go Card Reader read my Smart Watch as I walked past, which sits at reader height on my left wrist when I’m carrying my bag off the bus.

How do you carry your Go Card? While I carry my Go Card in a magnetic wallet attached to my phone, ever since they introduced the new readers I’ve had to detach the wallet to touch on/off, as the presence of the phone caused interference. I can imagine that if I tried it now, it might register a tap on my phone instead.

For accounting reasons I prefer to continue using a go card. I’ve disabled express mode on my phone for this reason. Happy to use a virtual go card in lieu of carrying one about, but it doesn’t exist (yet).
