Southern Thornlands PDA

After a few weeks of investigation into this, I am happy to be able to share a draft report into high-capacity transport for the Southern Redlands.

It is my hope that a transport corridor can be preserved from Thornlands to Southern Redland Bay.

The Southern Thornlands PDA is either the key opportunity or key roadblock to this. Preserving a corridor in that area using the PDA mechanisms is the first step action.

I am seeking review and discussion from the forum.

This report touched on:

  • What plans exist and are these adequate for a new urban character in the Southern Redlands?
  • What routes exist within the Redlands for new passenger transport?
  • What is a possible context for getting high-capacity transport to the Southern Redlands?
  • What are possible corridors for high-capacity in the Southern Redlands?
  • How can a corridor be preserved in the Southern Redlands?

I am a novice, this is not my profession. The engineering or technical factors are under described and weak. Some of the context data is assumptions. But, it just felt silly not to try and investigate a corridor- and the government is not.

Living in this region, development is not a bad thing, but it needs to be done with better growth in mind.

In this investigation, this project is assumed to be completed as:
• duplication of the heavy rail line between Manly and Cleveland, including
ancillary station upgrades in that span.
• Track straightening at key sections such as Norman Park, and
• potential third track electrification from Boggo Road to Lindum with triplication
to Manly may also assumed in this report.
• Level crossing removal works including potential projects like elevation of the
line in the Wynnum/Manly span.
• As outlined in SEQ Rail Connect, the upgrade is assumed to be completed in the
immediate five years following Cross River Rail opening (Department of
Transport and Main Roads, 2022).

A high-frequency local and feeder bus network interconnects the previous two trunk
lines in the Redlands transport network. This ensures better service coverage and
access to major transport interchanges.
In this investigation, this project is assumed to be completed in such a way as to offer:

• improved, high-frequency bus services between Capalaba, Cleveland, Victoria
Point, Southern Redland Bay, Loganholme and Gold Coast/Beenleigh line,
• comprising a service on key corridors like Redland Bay, Cleveland-Redland Bay
or Capalaba-Cleveland roads at least every 15 minutes, 6am-6pm on weekdays.
• Re-evaluation of the region’s feeder bus network should be undertaken to meet
with the Cleveland line and Brisbane Metro BRT.
• Upgraded public passenger transport facilities are assumed to be explored for
key corridors, including connections to active transport initiatives and select bus
lanes and signal priority.
• This report assumes a 0-4-year horizon on bus network review for the Redlands.
