Sydney Light Rail - Parramatta and CBD

Parramatta Light Rail

Slow start 6,000 passengers per weekday x 5 weekdays x 52 weeks => 1.56 million passengers per year… similar to a BUZ route in Brisbane. It is expected that patronage will grow with time…

The main issue is probably how slow it is - the alignment through the Parramatta CBD and unduly restrictive speed limits in other places don’t help.

Businesses sue for compensation over LRT construction.

High Court overturns ruling that NSW government was not liable for light rail delays

I expect this might mean more litigation for all light rail projects sadly. This outcome will make Governments very unlikely to do more light rail projects.

… And the case is being watched carefully from other places, where light rail developments have caused significant disruptions to businesses.

That includes Canberra and the Gold Coast. …

Very short-sighted decision IMO. The traders benefit from the patronage uplift once the light rail is complete, and yet you obviously wouldn’t expect them to have to pay the state for this. Not to mention Sydney is rapidly growing - while the businesses did lose customers due to the construction, they’d also lose them in the future if the street was standstill traffic all day!

So businesses are expected to make more money in the long term while suffering losses in the short term. Perhaps the government could assist them in bringing some of those expected future gains forward, using this obscure financial instrument called a business loan?
