Translink On Demand is a flexible public transport service in Queensland that lets you book a shared ride within a local area. You can travel to key destinations like bus stations, hospitals, shopping centres or employment hubs.
On demand transport services that users can pre-book to travel to key destinations? Aren’t they just government-funded, 50c maxi taxis?
Pretty much, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. They can more efficiently service last km journeys if the patronage isn’t high enough to warrant a full bus service.
This would definitely work in regional and rural areas where it would be impractical to implement a scheduled PT network due to its remoteness and severely low population.
The Translink On-Demand vary a little from region to region. The one I am more familiar with is the Ipswich Flexilink. It uses electric vehicles operated by Logan Coaches. I sometimes see these vehicles at Goodna Station as it provides a service to parts of Goodna and Bellbird Park (so called roam zone C), it also services parts of Barellan Point, Karalee and Chuwar (roam zone D).
Although on demand may help inter island transport for many retirees on the island it doesn’t help the connection with the mainland. They should also be looking at extending the times of operation to and from Caboolture until 9 pm daily.
I’ve never been a huge fan of Flexilink, especially the Ipswich, Gold Coast and Logan ones (Mount Tamborine I can excuse), as these services are in urbanised areas, that could be serviced by a better bus network and timetable. The problem with flexilink is that it puts up a barrier by having to prebook the service, which means extra work in trying to plan your day if you plan on using that service, of which you don’t really need to do with the bus as long as it has a decent frequency.
