Government Statement: 2032 Games Infrastructure Funding Deal Confirmed

Looks like my fears were incorrect and indeed there will be Olympics (and a stadium)

Olympics funding deal has been reached

By Cameron Atfield

The Queensland and Commonwealth governments have agreed on a new intergovernmental Olympic funding agreement, with $1.2 billion in federal funding to be redirected to the new stadium in Victoria Park.

The rest of the $7.1 billion funding envelope would deliver minor venues on a 50/50 funding basis.

The Albanese government had agreed to fund the proposed Brisbane Arena at Roma Street, but the Crisafulli government’s new delivery plan instead left the arena – to be built at Woolloongabba – to the private sector to deliver.

Deputy Premier Jarrod Bleijie and federal Infrastructure Minister Catherine King confirmed agreement had been reached this week, and the new agreement would be signed shortly.

Bleijie also announced four venues – the Logan and Moreton Bay indoor sports centres, the Sunshine Coast outdoor stadium and Barlow Park in Cairns – went out to procurement at 1pm today.

And so the Olympic leaking games have begun as foretold…

A commercial-in-confidence document “leaked” about VP on the same day funding for the Olympics is announced regarding VP.

CRR now expected to open in 2029. It is because somebody wants to tack on a new station that’s not part of the design so late in the project? So where’s the funding coming from for this station?

Except Suncorp has the bus station underneath because there isn’t a nearby busway station - so it’s not evidence of anything for Victoria Park.

The Brisbane Times article also has this little interesting snippet:

A new train station was possible, Bleijie said, but no decision had been made. It may be needed – sources have told this masthead the recently upgraded Exhibition Station may not be available for Games use, due to the proximity of the planned athletes’ village at the RNA Showgrounds.

The need for another station would be pretty certain if Exhibition is unavailable to the public - which I can well understand giving the security overlay needed for Athletes Village.

^^It’s all speculative, they do have event mode access to the Ekka station if the Exhibition grounds are quarantined.

Yes, a narrow corridor designed to cater to standard commuter levels of traffic bypassing the RNA event. That would not be anywhere near capable of accommodating large event crowds, Olympic or otherwise.

Here is the potential station that could be established at Vic Park (9News, 2025).

Totally AI so take it with a grain of salt.

It’s what 9 News has on their social account. TMR could have used AI to help generate the image but it does show a shuttle configuration rather than CRR servicing the stop. Hence, centre tracks CRR and outer tracks for surface shuttles or through surface services .

Is it really going to have two tracks in the middle with no platform?

Doubt it. IT will be a three platform station I reckon. All roads to a platform.

I reckon this is the most likely outcome as well, but I wish this state had some guts and made it either 5 or 6 platforms, so that the CRR gets 2 platform faces per direction and can then have longer dwell times without impacting line capacity.

Having a station for SEQ’s major stadium not connected to CRR makes Zero sense and a total waste of the CRR investment. Far better to modify Exhibition to be event ready.

Stadium should be down that end of park as it is.

As depicted, I see one island platform and one side platform with two express CRR tracks in the middle. There would likely be transfer opportunities at the Ekka station, as well as Roma St and other stations such as Albion for surface services.
