Why? That seems so pointless and inconvenient for passengers!
If I’m a passenger coming from North lakes, imagine how annoyed I’d be as my train makes its way down the Ekka loop, and sails straight past the Stadium station, only for me to have to get off at Roma Street and get on another train heading back the way I came!
No, I severely doubt this is the plan. It would be monumentally stupid for them to not have platforms on the CRR tracks here
As much as I hate the idea of adding yet another stop to presumably be serviced by already ‘slow’ express sector 1 services I have to admit this is a pretty good idea.
One thing that has stopped me from supporting the Victoria Park stadium option is my concern about Brisbane Metro’s ability to move 50,000+ passengers before and after an event (which would require at least 300 full metro vehicles).
With current NGRs able to carry 964 passengers and the QTMPs presumably able to carry even more due to less seating (as well as the ability to run services every 2-3 minutes post ETCS) the capacity to move people to and from Victoria Park will be incredible.
If we very roughly assume capacity of QTMP units to be ~1100 and have an UP and DOWN train every 2 minutes pre and post event that would allow more than 65,000 passengers per hour in an ideal scenario.
Admittedly I haven’t read the CM article because I don’t pay for rubbish, but if the sector 1 CRR routes will be running directly through there as well why not just have them stop? Or have them express through the station off peak but stopping during peak or during events or something, similar to how Exhibition has operated in the past.
I understand the idea behind a loop service but it seems like a missed opportunity to not have it set up to service those living nearby in Spring Hill and Kelvin Grove.
You need to go for a walk down there and check out the current track confirmation. They have layed additional tacks for the Ekka loop service as well as for peak layover trains.
I’m not sure about other members but having a station just before a tunnel dive doesn’t make sense from an operational and safety perspective. I haven’t seen stations built anywhere in the world metres before a tunnel dive.
From a egress perspective it’s better to have people disperse across the area rather than funneling to one station. shuttle services from the proposed new station and express services from the Ekka station in addition to metro services from the busway stations.
I also think there should be a busway spur that goes under the stadium to a metro station that can hold up to 10 vehicles at a time, arriving and departing every 1-3 minutes.
I think the current busway facilities will be adequate if the location is where they’re saying it is. That in conjunction with a new station will offer plenty of capacity. I think a busway spur would be a waste of resources.
Considering that Suncorp has an underground bus station as well as a nearby train station would be ample evidence to include one in a new stadium build.
I do like the idea of multiple platforms per through track, and with unlimited money I would try for a 5 or 6 platform station.
The question I have is whether the passenger flow is sufficiently dispersed throughout the day that you have overlapping flows of people in and out of the station, or will it be reasonably ‘peaky’ (everyone turns up and leaves at the same time). I would think that - post Olympics - event demand in this area would generally be in peaks. So you may not need separate arrival and departure platform faces (Spanish platforms).
The secondary problem I see is trying to load a full train, particularly an eventual 9 car train, with only 2 doors per carriage. I would wonder whether it would be beneficial to have an arrangement like Central (1/2 and 3/4) and Roma Street (4/5 and 6/7) where a trains can alternate platform faces to increase loading time without impacting on track capacity.
I prefer a shuttle set up because from experience the hold ups at Milton station during event times are up to 5 mins. If this occurs here it would affect CRR operations considerably. Considering this I’m dead against a new station on the CRR line. (Sector 1)
Re Dutton park is not an event station thus dwell times are minimal
One of the benefits of using existing busway stations for bus access is that the bus and train stations will be in different directions from the stadium, helping to disperse the crowds.
