If you want to avoid putting overhead wires in just put some batteries in the trams. Then they can charge from the existing wires north of Burleigh. But this is all silly - once you’ve gone to the expense of building a light rail line that will be heavily used the expense of extending the existing power system is surely worth it.
Having experienced the Newcastle trams, with their extended dwell times (they sometimes sit at the stop for 30 seconds, even if no-one is boarding/disembarking), I can’t recommend this idea.
Hear me out:
Diesel Powered Trams
The addition of batteries to the vehicles as they have in Canberra (as those who manage the Parliamentary Triangle don’t want overheads) adds 5 tons to the vehicle.
Different to Newcastle as trams will run under OHE for the majority of the trip which will recharge batteries.
Do not see any need to change approach on Gold Coast nor any cost saving.
No H2. Just keep the status quo …
I agree that it would be preferable just to build it properly with the wires, just pointing out that batteries would be better than hydrogen.
Hydrogen anything is always a stupid proposal.
Unless it’s rockets, then that can work.
Battery or supercapacitor technology is constantly improving.
5 tons today could be 2 tons in five years. Battery packs will get smaller and have higher energy density. If battery trams can go 10km on a single charge then you won’t need overhead wires. All you need is a 15 seconds on the charger and your good to go.
To be fair, I wouldn’t mind if CoGC finished the missing pieces of the Oceanway (of which I’ve taking a bit of a liking recently) but the main objective council should aim for and champion is to get Stage 4 to completion.
The second most popular option (thankfully by a big margin) is a second storey on the M1
.
I really hope that was a novelty choice option.![]()
Definitely novelty. Just imagine stacks upon stack of pure American freedom.
Who are the 6% of people who voted to tear up the Glink?
I’m scared that not only there are NIMBYs who oppose the construction of major, much-needed transport projects, there are also NIMBYs who also oppose PT infrastructure that currently exist, and that they would be happy to have crucial PT infrastructure torn up for whatever reason.
Probably Karen’s acolytes.

Canopies are now in place at stations between Mermaid Park and Nobby. Miami North is getting close as well.
Yeah saw that as well yesterday. They also have a lot of work to do around Burleigh still and from Burleigh to Nobbys.
Tram tracks are in place continuously from Broadbeach South to around Hythe St, so they are getting quite fast at it.
I guess the base is laid and they moved all the services and laid new ones which took quite a lot of time.
As you mentioned the rest of the project should be quite speedy.
GC light rail stage 4 is dead.
