Is there anything we can do about this??? Having this much metro CANNOT be the right way to progress right? I don’t fully understand the mentality behind The Wave-ing goodbye of all these rail projects
^ I think that article is actually saying that the “metro” referred to is the replacement for rail between Birtinya and Maroochydore.
Guaranteed there is going to be no “metro” on the Gold Coast Highway, not unless they can magically make the corridor wider and get NHVR to approve on-road passenger ops. It will be more buses, maybe some on-road bus priority falling short of continuous bus lanes. That will work for a bit, before light rail ultimately becomes necessary.
Ohhh - I just had a quick reread of it, and now it makes sense. Although I can see how people can be misled into thinking that Tom Tate will replace Stage 4 in favour of HESS Lightram 25s’ from the aforementioned article
To say I’m enraged would be perhaps an understatement. I am absolutely livid. This decision shows absolutely no interest in the future of transport on the Gold Coast, and locks in at least another decade of severe congestion south of Burleigh Heads that buses will be unable to bypass.
I am a fairly frequent visitor to the Gold Coast, and holiday there usually every year. I plan to write to the Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce, and explain to them why I will not be staying in or visiting their area in the foreseeable future, due to this decision. Maybe they’ll slap some sense into the government.
Just because the bcc launched a “metro system” that yes, did increase usage of buses a long the busway, shouldn’t be a que for every good plan to be replaced by a “metro”. All the brisbane metro did was encourage people who wouldn’t normally take the bus to take a nicer and more frequent bus comparatively to the buses that ran 66 and 111. Sure a bi-artic is good but a tram and/or train will always be superior. Sure the BCC “metro” is good and is a helluva lot better than the 66 and 111 but it shouldn’t be your go to transport development scheme unless you very heavily lack rail within your area.
To me, the “metro” is a good solution for the unique situation that Brisbane had at the time. That being, a busway corridor with lots of local services that were causing congestion, and a need to transition to a trunk-and-feeder style system. The metro does a good job as a BRT trunk corridor service, using existing infrastructure and complementing local bus routes. I have plenty of grievances with it, like the cost and individual route configuration with BNBN. But I can see its purpose.
However, the success of the Brisbane Metro in its individual circumstances, doesn’t give the government a green light to put “metro” BRT services where there should be heavy or light rail. Especially on the Gold and Sunshine Coast, which respectively need light and heavy rail extensions.
Timing of this is awful. With completion of S3 coming up, all those contractors will move away to other jobs. Even when Labor get back in to restart the project the damage is done.
Welcome to the forum @NothingToSay. Completely agree with you. This will set back GCLR Stage 4 for years. It’s worse than the decision to make the 3rd stage of the Direct Sunshine Coast Line a busway. At least that project is still in the planning phase!
