On the network

I know there was this post in the developer google group some time ago by someone else which never got a reply if you wanted to follow up there or cite it: https://groups.google.com/g/translink-australia-opendata/c/WtovUe_HhB4.

What’s with the filthy NGRs out on the network? NGR750 spotted at Goodna on a down service today looks like it hasn’t been washed for months. A distinct ‘maroon mud’ look. It was very difficult to discern the number.

I imagine that the train wash at Normanby was out of action during the track closures. They’re probably still catching up now that the tracks are open again.

Got official confirmation of this from a QR employee while onboard XG86. Expect all NGR runs to switch from D to X in the near future.

Hope that was the problem. Not a good look!

Legend, thank you for doing that.

Is there a reference guide for other unit types? Obviously D routes are NGR currently, T routes seem to be IMUs, but some runs just seem to use 4 numbers, or start with a number followed by a letter (e.g 1E75).

As a rule of thumb…

  • D > NGR set at 140 max
  • X > NGR with ETCS at 140 max (may change to 160 max in the future)
  • T > 6-car IMU or IMU/SMU at 130 max
  • 1 > 6-car SMU or EMU
  • J > 3-car SMU or EMU
  • U > 3-car IMU
  • V > Diesel Tilt Train
  • Q > Electric Tilt Train

This website is a good guide even though it’s getting a bit outdated: Train Numbering Guide « qrig.org – queensland railway's interest group

I’ve always had the idea that the readers could at least show date and time when they’re not active honestly.

(Or at least use the translink typeface -Nunito for those who don’t know-)

I think they should show an animated Translink logo between stops.

Was persuaded to go out for a bit tonight.

First day last Sunday Doomben train.
Had 2 others in first half arriving into Albion.

Last night of route 316 running:

Unannounced closure of stop 8 for water works. Got directed by traffic staff to stop 7.

Cultural Centre final works appear to be underway. Fair few workers around.

Cyclist dies after collision with train

A male cyclist has died after he was involved in a collision with a train in Runcorn early this morning.

Emergency services received reports of collision at 4.33am at the corner of Nathan Road and Penarth Street.

So sad - these kind of things break my heart for the families involved. And sadly I doubt this will encourage the relevant authorities to remove the level crossings in that area.

Apparently using the level crossing at Nathan Street - presumably the cyclist rode around the boom arm but probably not worth speculating yet. Looking at it on Google Maps it does look rather confusing, with an intersection on one end and only a single boom arm on either side of the crossing, no full length barrier. Probably a good candidate for level crossing removal especially after this.

Just thinking, was this the crossing that had a relatively high speed collision between an NGR set and a car that stopped between the two boom arms in 2022, or was that the one down the road?

I remain disappointed the LGCFR scope doesn’t include Altandi to Kuraby. That would have extended the quad, allowed for 2 proper high-level platforms at Altandi, deletion of the unnecessary 3rd platforms at Runcorn and Fruitgrove, addition of a fourth platform at Kuraby (not happening in current project) and deletion of the 3 LXs. The section between the Bulimba Creek bridges and the Gateway Motorway overpass is probably ripe for a sky-rail treatment to get this implemented.

Agreed. I think this would be a potential solution for that stretch which would provide real benefits while still being potentially something that would be funded.

Shortly before Banoon, tunneling and surfacing near Altandi station (which would be renamed Sunnybank). Banoon would be in a trench on largely vacant land and then enter the tunnel immediately after the station.

After this station the line would be elevated over what is currently the St Laurence’s fields, and along the existing corridor to before the Gateway Motorway to remove those crossings. Runcorn and Fruitgrove would be merged to create a new Runcorn station, giving good station spacing while providing what the communities need.

Express services would run Beenleigh all stations to Sunnybank (Altandi) and then express to Boggo Road.

All stations services would run from Sunnybank inbound, maybe even potentially going via South Bank?

I’m no expert, just trying to proactively think of realistic solutions. Anyhow, those are my thoughts.

I’d reckon this map diagram could have a lot more frequent routes if the current half hourly services were to be upgraded to 15 minutes.

Those being: 710, 722, 735, 738, 745, 747, 760, 763 and 766…

Pair of SMU200s on train run TP93, the 6:40pm from Varsity Lakes to Brisbane Airport.

Arrived horribly delayed (about 12 down) and is now more than 15 minutes late because it can’t keep up with the normal Gold Coast line timetable.

…uhm, who had the idea of sending a set that cannot do more than 100km/h on a service that requires 140?

I’ve noticed they’ve been also running express from Bowen Hills to make up time on numerous occasions this week.

That sounds like the sets I travelled on coming back from Cleveland on Monday last. They have been stabling some SMU200s out at Ipswich of late, no idea what they were doing on the Gold Coaster. I did notice on Monday the NGRs remain generally filthy. The odd carriage cleaner than the rest, assume that might have been due graffiti removal. It seems the brake squeal on the NGRs is much improved.
