Passenger Information Screens (PIDs)

Yes, that’s the main concern. It would require multiple prototypes and user testing to get right, but I don’t think the problem is insurmountable.

For example, if could group routes which are due to arrive within 1 minute of each other and only turn off once both routes have departed. Alternatively, there could be a screen instead for drivers indicating which routes have been requested, with a way of selecting a specific route.

You could have several buttons, running down either on the side (like smartphone volume buttons) or the front, with each button corresponding to a departure. Might be worth also introducing a guideline to only accept requests in the last {x} minutes before a departure, to reduce the chance of unnecessarily delaying services

Could this be done through the translink app? E.g. someone would request that a bus stops at a particular stop

Though I’d be worried about bad actors requesting every bus stop (which I’m not entirely sure how that would be prevented), I think this would be a pretty cheap option, and pretty easily expanded (I think)

A strange situation at Eagle Junction this arvo where the PIDs were showing all trains arriving in 1 minute. They had someone doing the announcements for the actual wait.

Maybe if the app used the user’s location, then allowed stops to be requested for services stopping within a certain radius of them. You’d still need some extra restrictions (1 request at a time, ability to remove request)

Agree with this being a cheaper solution, but I definitely prefer the idea of physical requests in terms of accessibility. Doesn’t mean we can’t do both though!

How does this even get this bad? Or was it a PID error?

They are always like that at Fortitude Valley in the morning too, showing all arrivals coming in 1 min. Apparently with ETCS2 they will use speed and geo positions rather than just track triggers. This should allow for exact timing of arrivals down to the second.

In Denmark the show arriving in 1/2 min. (I found the use of fractions quite bizarre though.)

I recently joined SEQTA and through their leak found out it appears QR/Translink are considering the concepts I created (I sent them to QR’s Facebook in early 2024), I hope it is able to come to fruition! What a strange turn of events haha

It’d be great if they did adopt these, or at least took inspiration from them. Much easier to read & nicer looking than the current PIDs, which while functional are showing their age

When will they roll out new PIDs?

Just redid them taking into account everyone’s comments + adding loading indicator (since should be introduced with QTMP), as well as making the design overall more space efficient. Will send off to QR again so hopefully they can consider!

If they roll out new PIDs, can stations still relying on paper timetables and station announcements get PIDs. Bit of a gripe with the network but here goes:
You have no idea of the pain of people asking what train at one platform stations without PIDs… some things I overheard while waiting.
“Where’s the other platform”
“Is this our train?” (the announcement just specified Cleveland, they were after a city train)
It’s 2026. PIDs at all stations in the CityTrain network should be a thing (bar stations only served by the Gympielander)

These are excellent and very easy to understand. Let’s hope QR take note and implement.

The other thing we really need to adopt (I know there are screens at Central but it’s half baked) is an individual line services screen (as per London/Sydney), showing service status on all lines, along with verbal announcements. Have these shown on all screens throughout the network.

Current PIDs are fine honestly. In fact we should go back to the old dot matrix displays because I need the nostalgia.

Hill Street Yeppoon Interchange. Only the 440 (Rockhampton-Capricorn Coast) stop features one.

I’ve also spotted the J-pole style at Stockland Rockhampton inbound and outbound on Moores Creek Road and Denham Street at Bolsover Street in Rockhampton CBD which is the main northbound stop for Kinetic services.

I was thinking how they can be more vandal proof. I noticed on my recent trip to the Netherlands that they also have eInk displays at stops but higher and out of harm’s way.

Isn’t it a shame when we have to think about making things vandal proof?

I love going to Singapore/Japan and seeing public property without graffiti or scratches on screens/trains etc.
