@Electro_Sykes Where did you hear this one anyway?
There is also the not inconsiderable (over time) additional wear on trains braking, stopping and accelerating for no good purpose instead of running at line speed.
Iām honestly surprised Thomas street wasnāt on the list
I guess it isnāt completely in the middle of nowhere like traveston or thagoona but how many people actually use Thomas street for anything?
Itās too close to Ipswich to be used by west Ipswich citizens to commute to Ipswich but if you want to commute to Brisbane then itās easier to drive to east Ipswich then deal with the rosewood connection, heāll even if you donāt drive itās like 90% of the time faster to catch a bus to an eastern Ipswich station or Ipswich itself than deal with the rosewood connection
Itās like an even worse holmview with the problem of being close to a far superior station that gets better headway
Thomas street would be better utilized when toowoomba is linked by intersuburban rail with new alignments in laidley and the ranges crossing ⦠Same for thagoona and others on the line. Currently not utilizing its potentialā¦
Just like bus stops being too close, train stations can be too close as well.
And unlike bus stops, a station is very expensive to rebuild and maintain.
Speed is also very important, given how SEQ trains do around 45 km/hr on average in peak hour.
Stations should be kept if they are genuinely useful, if not, then merger or removal should be looked at.
Tennyson was a more recent closure as well.
To be fair does that have any sort of realistic timeframe
Is maintaining stations that calling āfiller tierā would be generous because they might be more useful if rail ever got to tooowoboma actually useful
So is the Crisafulli Government seriously considering closing Holmview, Bindha, Thagoona & Traveston.
Where has this list come from?
Well given there are even more insignificant stations then Holmview I assumed most of those would also be on the chopping block.
Closing Holmview though I really hope the Logan Mayor is just talking out of his arse
Holmview is not being suggested for closure as part of any logical review, theyāre just trying to save the money of rebuilding it for GCLFR.
Even if itās a barely disguised money saver does Holmview need to exist if GCLFR is moving Beenleigh halfway closer to what was already a very short distance to a station nobody uses because itās too close to a station that takes half as long to get to the city
I think most people will just use Beenleigh anyway because itās better service-wise. I think the money used to build Holmview station will just be a waste.
Also Iām pretty sure the area surrounding Holmview station is in a flood-prone area so thereād be no chance of increased density.
Then again, I donāt live in Logan so take what I say with a grain of salt.
The Express isnāt quite twice as quick to the city as the all stations, itās only an 18 minute time saving (46mins vs 64mins from Beenleigh to Roma Street).
On top of my earlier comment regarding reasons why the station is worth keeping, even though it would be better moved towards Edens Landing, one that Iāve just learn about is that the station is directly next to the rather large Services Trade College which is just off Spanns Road. From the new Beenleigh Station this would represent a ~1.5km walk or waiting for either the 562 or 567 - both hourly services which oh so conveniently leave 5 minutes apart, resulting in a 55 minute waitā¦
I feel that speaks more of the problems with the buses in that section than it does the need for the existence of holmview as a station especially with the station being as it is now still being incredibly underutilised
46 vs 64 is a massive difference, thatās nearly 40% faster. I was exaggerating saying twice as fast but thatās actually a bigger time saver than I actually expected
The $100 million saved on building a new station could sure pay for some nice bus improvements!
The Government would hardly spend anywhere near the whole saved amount on bus improvements. We would probably get some new hourly bus route added, with the remainder disappearing into consolidated revenue. Thatās usually what happensā¦
Holmview is still very much wanted by its local community. This still indicates ridership, and it would be a waste to remove it.
A mate of mine who is a senior engineer on the project said it is highly unlikely that the station will close.
But a new Beenleigh station is within the catchment, and faster trains also mean more ridership as well.
Consider 90 car parks added as compensation to the new Beenleigh station. Using a high estimate of 80k per car park, this cost would be:
90 parks x $80,000/park = $7.2 million cost.
If not building the station saves $150 million, then you are still $142 million aheadā¦
With the remainder, you could fund a bus, potentially cycling improvements etc as well.
