Brisbane Metro

Did the walk through @ 12. It’s quite deep at the centre too. Saying that they could tunnel under the river in the future I reckon.

The bridge open day article from the Brisbane Times addresses this:

These routes use the new tunnel in an interesting way - they cross from KGS through to QSBS through the underground connection, but then go out the Queen Street Tunnel, then onto North Quay and down the Adelaide Street Tunnel. This suggests that the connection outbound between QSBS and KGS has been permanently severed (well, at least in the sense that it won’t be available in general use).

At the moment they are entering from Roma Street via George St. It triggers the lights and delays services out of KGS with in the station.

No, I think the QSBS→KGS link is still open. Otherwise routes 345 northbound, and 61 and 385 westbound would also have been in that list. They don’t need to use the Adelaide St tunnel as they can turn right near Stop 1D and use the existing underground link. The listed services can’t turn around inside QSBS to use the existing link - 330 because it’s at stop 1B and the 4XX routes are on platform 2.

I wonder how many services will still use that link come Monday.

There are lights governing the Adelaide St tunnel into KGS station, but you don’t really want them triggered every few minutes.

Ahh, that makes sense - I didn’t think to correlate the particular platforms to the direction of the route.

Thinking about it further, it’s a lose-lose situation in that both methods will disrupt the free flow of the Adelaide Street tunnel routes - either it results in a red light against routes aboveground at Queen Street/William Street/North Quay intersection, or a red light underground at the roundabout.

The link itself is still open, but passengers will not be able to travel standalone QSBS to KGS. Routes like 345/61/385 northbound don’t stop at KGS, they go express to Roma St.

It’s best to think of QSBS and KGS as one interchange. This has been an adjustment for people, but it helps to clear congestion.

Ie.

345/330 used to go through KGS, now it’s QSBS, so if you are wanting KGS your options are to walk from QSBS or change at Roma St to a service that stops at KGS (ie 333/340/m1/m2). So slight annoyance but plenty of frequency to cover the transfer, and has also given more people from the North access into QSBS which they never had before, but also removed vic bridge congestion as they can now terminate at QSBS.

Even though some changes happened months ago, there are still people who assume the old network and forget that 330/345 terminate at QSBS.
Hopefully once the upgrades to the Roma St platforms are complete, the transfer experience becomes much better.

The 330 uses the surface streets to return back to Bracken Ridge before the tunnel was open.

I conducted an interview with Steve Austin this morning on ABC Radio Brisbane. You’ll be able to find the audio on the ABC listen website. It should be 20 or so minutes into the program.

I caught the M1 through the tunnel this morning to see how it went. The turn from the bridge onto North Quay flowed smoothly with no stopping, straight around and into the tunnel - the curve into the tunnel is signposted at 15km/h so it is a little slow, but is was free flowing.

In the tunnel itself it things turned into a bit of a slow slog - the M1 was part of a queue of buses (several conventional buses and another Metro at the head I believe), which slowed the trip down to a crawl and ruined my chance of fitting the entire trip across the bridge and down the tunnel into a single YouTube Short. First the queue was caught at a red light at the KGS end, but even when that had turned green, congestion at the KGS platform that meant we had to stop at the green light until there was space to accommodate us - it was during this stop that my YT Short ends.

I intend to catch an M1 home this afternoon, to try and see whether this morning was just bad luck, or maybe something we have to get used to. At worst, it was no worse than going down the Queen Street Tunnel, just no better than it.

I too experienced the same queueing issue going into KGS this morning in the shoulder peak. Not super impressed. I also found the tunnel very bumpy

I didn’t find it particularly bumpy (no more than the rest of the trip), but we weren’t travelling particularly fast down the tunnel.

City Changing I say.

I also had a go on my way in today - my trip seemed quicker once we crossed over from CCBS. We passed a decent sized outbound queue on the way around the ben into the tunnel, very short wait to get through the roundabout and into City Hall. At least I can say I’ve done it - I have very little reason to use the inner parts of the busway these days (other than at the Gabba or Buranda) without deliberately going out of my way.

First ride through felt rather slow, despite not having any traffic.
however at least 1 driver on a M1 forgot to take the left turn from the victoria bridge and went the old way.

I got a Metro home last night (so just before 6pm), and that experience was much better than what I encountered yesterday morning, and much closer to what I was hoping for with the new tunnel.

From leaving the platform at KGS, we were up and out of the tunnel, and turning onto the Victoria Bridge in what felt like a minute flat. I was quite impressed.

Caught the 61 today. Lot of stopping at lights both with new tunnel and Roma St portal. It works but it is not rapid in any sense of the word and that is outside of peak let alone mass loading around an Olympics.
